How to Prepare for a Ragnar...

My last post detailed the experience of the Ragnar, but I did a LOT of Googling before our Ragnar adventures to find out how I needed to equip myself for a Ragnar race and hopefully, this will be that post for you.

Reasons to run a Ragnar:

-you're crazy.
-you really love the 5/6 other people in your van.
-you have a medal obsession.
-you want to have an adventure.
-you're tired of the same old distance.
-you want to make new friends.

Reasons to not run a Ragnar:

-48 hours with the same people in sweaty/tired/achy conditions.
-Said sweaty/tired/achy conditions do not bring out your best self.
-Weird food things.
-It will destroy a regular routine
-No one is a stranger.

Things I wish I knew:

1.  There is no stranger danger at a Ragnar.

When I first heard of a Ragnar years ago, I knew it was crazy which is why I wanted to do it.  For years, the logistics scared me away.  I couldn't find 11 other crazy people.  Maybe 2 others, max.  Fast forward several years and now we have social media groups where we can find teams/other runners to fill a team.  It was a risk to decide to run with complete strangers, but I had faith that it would work out, I mean obviously these people are as crazy as I am since they are running this same race, right?  Right.

Don't be scared to join a group of strangers.  Definitely talk to them through group texts/email/FaceTime before the race to make sure they aren't assholes or completely repellant to you, but definitely be willing to take the risk on strangers.  The people that were strangers in my van were AWESOME people and I'm so glad they are now in my circle.  Same for the neighbors near us at the Sunset Ragnar.  I became Facebook friends with them and told them to let me know if they ever need another runner.

Also, it doesn't matter if they are your teammate or not, people will talk to you at the exchanges.  If you are in some type of costume, you are inviting attention to yourself.  I was wearing a unicorn onesie and happily accepted photo/selfie requests.  We are all there for a good time and I was glad to be part of that.

2. Remind yourself WHY you are running this race.

There will absolutely be times that you will have to dig DEEP to keep going.  With minimal recovery time and wonky eating and no sleep and who know what the course will hold, you will be challenged.  Add into that being with 5/6 other people for 48 hours?  REALLLLL DEEP.  Adele's Rolling in the Deep DEEP.  When you are ready to just jump out of the van or, worse, have the van pick you up on the 900th hill on your leg, remember why you are there.

If your team is more about participation than winning, slow down and appreciate what is around you.  Appreciate the experience.  Sometimes I get lost in the pace, not the race.  I participate in races so I can experience the location, when I focus on just getting to the end, I don't appreciate the journey to get there.  Even if the journey is me running down the side of a busy highway with transfer trucks passing me at 55+ mph.

For me, I wanted to see New England in the fall (just call me a Leaf Peeper).  I wanted to challenge myself with something different than a half marathon.  I wanted another medal for my rack.  Did I absolutely dread getting out of the van to run leg 3?  Fuck yes.  Am I glad I powered through?  Fuck yes.

3. The only way to prepare is to run a Ragnar/relay.

This sucks, but it is true, because your race is different from everyone else's.

I was not afraid of the distance (which you can prepare for) and running at weird times (which you can also prepare for), but I was afraid that I was going to be cranky and someone else would be cranky and the van would vote to leave me on the side of the road to Uber to my next leg if they didn't just drop me off at public transit with my shit and tell me to go home.  I tend to escalate quickly, so this wasn't an unlikely scenario in my head.

I also wasn't prepared for was being so poorly fueled (while being SOOOO TIRED).
I was so tired and dehydrated I had a headache for most of the race.  That super sucked.  It was hard to remember to keep drinking water because we were in/out of the van so frequently and when we were stopped for a while, it was hopefully for sleep and that one time for food.  IDK why our servers were afraid to keep our glasses filled with water, but that was an issue when we did stop for food.

I didn't know how to properly fuel myself.  There's lots of talk about van snacks, but I'm not a snacker.  I usually eat 3 meals a day.  Snacks don't fill me up, but there isn't TIME for meals.  I didn't realize that.  The other problem is that I didn't want to run with a meal on my stomach.  It's complicated, yo.  For my next relay race (because I'm glutton for punishment, I guess), I will insist on an insulated cooler to pack sandwich meats or something so I can take in something besides mini muffins and fruit snacks.  I wonder how well I would have done with a protein powder as a meal replacement, but hadn't tried it and wasn't about to try it DURING the race.

I did bring my post-workout powder and I believe that helped me a LOT with recovery because I usually have it after my workouts.  I only drank it after my first and second legs, knowing that after my 3rd leg we'd be getting a meal.

4.  Be compassionate and show appreciation.

This sounds like something your mom told you growing up, but your captain, and if you have them, your driver/navigator, are busting their asses to help YOU run this race.  Make sure you show these people appreciation and if they need something, MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Also, the other van is also your team (if you're not an ultra team).  Don't be selfish.  Think of how your actions will affect others.  We had 2 runners in van 1 that weren't able to make it to the race and van 1 ghosted the long runs, not necessarily the legs of the missing runners.  This sucked for van 2 because it meant even less recovery time, even though van 1 was able to get in all their recovery time.  Our van had 7 people and theirs had 4 and when we asked to put something into their van, they said, "Not our problem."  Yall, I'm sassy on a good day, but I'm outright bitchy when I'm exhausted, sore, and hungry.  But even I would have never said that to anyone, especially people on my team.

Also, everyone is tired.  Your bad attitude isn't helpful.  But also, if you had the best race of your life and none of your teammates are at the exchange because they all fell asleep in the van and you didn't text that you were a mile out and you bang on the windows in excitement and wake everyone up, do NOT expect your vanmates to be excited for you.  They might love you, but they also might kill you.

5.  COMMUNICATE YOUR NEEDS/SITUATION.

This is in all caps because it is imperative to surviving 48 hours with anyone, especially strangers.  These people might not know you.  They don't know that your hanger is on another level.  They don't know that when you have a headache, them shining their headlamp directly into your eyes could result in a maiming.  By communicating your situation/needs, you are telling people what is going on with you so THEY can be compassionate to YOU.

If you tell them that you are extremely tired and you're not thinking straight they know to probably not take directions from you.  If you explain that you're still sweaty from your run and every time they roll down the window you almost become hypothermic, they will understand why you're asking them to roll up the window, even if they really want to cheer on all the runners the van passes and air out the stink.  If you don't like when people cheer you on as they pass, tell your team that so they can cheer quietly for you or so they at least know not to be offended when you're just in the zone, kthx.  I straight up told our team that I would prefer no van support during my runs because it's distracting to me and that if I had an emergency, I'd let them know or flag down a passing van.  So I'd set off, they'd cheer me on as they eventually passed me on the way to the next exchange, and I'd meet them there.

Prioritize the current runner and the runner-on-deck over everyone else.

6.  Be flexible.

Nothing about a Ragnar race is exact.  Everything is an estimate and depends on soooo many different factors.  The pace of a runner determines how long it will take them to run the leg, but if they want support during their leg, it means less stopped time for the van.  If a runner ghosts a leg, it will affect the timing of the overall event.  Sometimes, there will be holds on start times so participants don't arrive too early/late at exchanges and your team can get strikes (3 and you're disqualified) for violating the rules.  If a runner is struggling, they may go slower than their estimated pace.  It is what it is.

The captain will be getting texts from Race Command to keep them up-to-date on the situation.  During our race, there was a car fire along the course.  Runners had to go around it, which was sketchy.  There was also a gap in the course.  It happens.  Just roll with it.

Some of the major exchanges were full-service (you could go inside to sleep/shower/use the bathroom), some were only half-service (you could go inside to use the bathroom and there was a hang out space, but no showers/sleep space).  Take advantage of the full service exchanges.  Sleeping on the hard floor of a warm gym is better than sleeping in a field when the temp drops and the wind kicks up... and both are better than sitting in the van for another second.

7.  Prepare what you can.

-Have a meeting (virtual is perfectly fine, it's the way of the future!) with your team a few weeks prior to the race.  If you're running with strangers this is a good way to get to know them, but also you can coordinate who is bringing what so you don't end up bringing duplicate items and wasting precious van space.

-Coordinate with your team if you are doing costumes/etc.  It's perfectly acceptable to not, but you don't want to leave someone out of a team plan.

-Decorate your van BEFORE the race starts.  Doing it during the race is stressful.

-Have dinner with your team/van the night before.  KNOW the PLAN.  Everyone being on the same page eliminates a lot of drama when you're all tired.

-Having dinner with your team means arriving at a decent time and having a hotel room the night before.  It may seem like an extra cost, but you'll appreciate that you were able to be horizontal the night before the race.

-If you can recruit someone to drive your van, DO IT.  I honestly do not know how we would have survived without a driver.  None of us were at our optimal condition and I cannot imagine driving the van on such little sleep is actually safe (not that the driver is getting more sleep, but at least they aren't running) in a place you don't know trying to follow signs that may or may not be there.

-Have someone who is willing to find the places to eat when there is time.  Finding a place to eat, in consideration to food limitations (i.e. gluten free, vegan, etc) of a group of people can be difficult, especially when everyone is hungry and unable to make choices. Having a person who is willing to do this to provide a few suggestions to everyone is much less complicated than everyone doing their own searches.  This needs to be done in advance of being AT a major exchange because time is precious.  I'd recommend eateries that are on the way to the next exchange or close to a major exchange.

8.  What to bring

Everyone wants to know EXACTLY what to bring, especially if you are travelling in from outside the race area with limited luggage space.  I can't tell you.  But I can tell you what I brought and used and what I brought that I didn't use and what I didn't bring that I wish I had.  The more you bring, the less room you have. Bring what you need, but see if you can't share things everyone will use like food, wet wipes, bandaids, etc.

What I want to figure out is how to pack so next time I don't have to pull out my suitcase after every leg to change.  I know some people suggest the plastic 3-drawer organizers, but our van definitely didn't have space for that.  Maybe it means more, smaller bags, but I also didn't want to have my stuff strewn about everywhere to get lost (because shit WILL get lost/crushed in a van with 6 people constantly getting in/out/shuffling).  It didn't help that we took the train to get there so I couldn't bring more, smaller luggage.  It's a weird situation that would only really be solved by driving there, which isn't always feasible.

Didn't bring, then needed:

-KT tape.  The medic tent didn't have KT tape.  Fortunately, I walked from van to van at an exchange point asking if anyone had KT tape and eventually someone did.  Thank you, kind stranger for my knee bra.
-Paper towels

Brought, didn't use:

-Attaday roller
-2nd towel (although a vanmate said they wished they'd have brought a 2nd towel, one for sweat, one for shower, depends on you)
-Water cooler (like for a sports team, good idea in theory, but it took up way too much room)
-disposable teeth brushers (we had bathroom access at major exchanges and I just used my toothbrush)
-knuckle lights

Brought, used:

-3 full running outfits in individual grocery bags with some type of odor/moisture absorber (I had charcoal bags on hand, but shoe balls would probably also work).  I know the other posts say gallon ziplock bags, but they obviously didn't mean for a fall/winter race or have boobs.  I even put a sticky note in the 2nd and 3rd bags to remember to grab items used in other legs (my heel lift, for instance).

-2 pairs of running shoes (especially important if rain is in the forecast)

-a van outfit (I wore a unicorn onesie over shorts and a t-shirt that kept me perfectly toasty during fall in New England, but sweatpants/a comfy shirt are crucial.  I didn't want to always be in my compression leggings)

-non-running shoes that you can slip on/off (flip flops/sandals/clogs) as part of your van outfit.  Free the toes!

- regular pillow/blanket (but I'd trade this for a toddler pillow (smaller) and a sleeping bag instead since you don't know if you'll be sleeping outside or inside).

-recovery item(s)
...tens unit.  I knew going into the race that I was already injured so this was another recovery tool that I used.
...yoga mat because sometimes you don't want to do child's pose in the dirt.
...foam roller; I wish I would have used it more, but the opportunities were low.
Whatever your recovery tool is, make sure you have it on hand.

-Fully charged battery packs for all the devices with the cables for each device you will need to charge (watch, cell phone, earbuds, etc).  Do not count on your vehicle having places to charge your devices.

-bandaids/blister patches/moleskin.  The medic tent will have some things, but it's best to have it when you need it.

-a clean outfit to go home in.  Even if you don't get to shower after your last race, this will help give you life back.

-ALL THE WIPES.  I brought toilet wipes because I had a lot on hand and they worked just as well as shower wipes or face wipes.

-a roll of toilet paper (by the end of the course, sometimes the porta-pottys are out of TP and that is no bueno)

-a popup changing tent

-back and head lights and a reflective vest for the night leg (the vest is NOT optional)
...I had knuckle lights that I didn't use, but I loved the clip on light instead of having to deal with a headlamp bouncing around.

If you have room:

-sleeping pad/cot

Packing List (link to the Google doc below):

There could still be items this list is missing, because as I said, no one runs your race but you and maybe you require different things.  For me, I wanted a clip on light instead of a headlamp.  Also, no one else needed a tens unit.  You do you, but also remember space is limited.

Hopefully, if you're reading this post to prepare for your upcoming Ragnar event, or you're considering doing a Ragnar event, this has helped you.  If I forgot something, make sure to leave a comment to tell me what I missed!

Happy Running!!!!

Weekend Review {10/5}

FRIDAY

Friday was eventful.

The POD arrived.  "Work" things ("" because there's not much to do besides sit at the computer).  Meri and Sandy snuggled together for well over 30 minutes, which blew my mind.  Then after my morning meeting, I was searching on Marketplace and saw a post from an hour prior that someone was giving away free boxes and so I hauled my ass over there ASAP and picked up as many boxes as Willow could fit and came home and did more "work".

In the evening, Teh German and I went to California Dreaming for dinner because they had a reservation available at 7:15 and that meant I didn't have to continue looking for dinner options.  Teh German agreed to this plan.

The two things I was most looking forward to was a Dr. Pepper martini and the croissants.  And the server informed me right away that they were out of Dr. Pepper.  HHHHAAATTTEEEE.  Much rudes.  I looked up the recipe for the drink online and none of the recipes I found actually contain Dr. Pepper so maybe I should have pushed it, but I didn't.  We came home and I crawled into bed for scrollin' time until it was sleepy time.

SATURDAY

Saturday was kinda eventful.  In the morning, Teh German went to cars and coffee.  I did a GEGR applicant interview (my first one and it was kinda fun).  After the interview, Teh PT Wife and I headed to Halls for bison filet for lunch/dinner which was fabulous (the company more than the food, which is a tough competition).  After Halls we went by BJ's to pick up some items and then headed back home.

What you can't hear is me having a mouthgasm with every bite I took,
but I'm going to let you imagine that.

The afternoon was mostly just "cleaning" the house for the going away gathering in the evening and dog snuggles.

I took no photos because I was busy socializing, but we had a final gathering at Teh Ville.  It was bittersweet because it was all of our people in one place for the last time.  It was fantastic getting to see everyone, even if it was to say, "See ya later."  I do want to note that Sandy really struggles with stranger danger in our house and usually feels the need to be attached to me when strangers come in.  She was on high alert ALL NIGHT LONG and I had to send her to a bed multiple times so she'd lay down because her rear was saggin'.  Thankfully, she knew that I wasn't punishing her and she would stay in the bed for as long as she could see me.  When I went outside, so did she and she'd lay down in the grass where she could see me.

It was 0030 when we finally headed to bed and 0100 when I put my phone down.  I'm too old for that.

SUNDAY

I woke up at 0800 on Sunday after sending Meri back to bed once.  I got up and let the dogs out and fed them breakfast, which Sandra refused.  I assumed it had a lot to do with being overwhelmed the night before and I have no idea if people were feeding the dogs chips/bbq from the buffet.  Rather than ask them not to feed the dogs, I just didn't even mention it and hoped that it meant people would just KNOW not to feed the dogs.  It wasn't a battle I wanted to fight, so I just didn't.  If they got fed, they got fed.  It is what it is.

When I went upstairs, I noticed that someone (PAX) had been having a LOT of fun and knocked over my Willow Tree figurines with a stuffie.  I remembered yelling at them the day prior after I heard a ruckus, but I hadn't been upstairs to notice when there was light, so I hadn't seen it.  I will say I loled a bit.

We met Teh Neighbor Besties at Holy City Brewing for brunch (because I needed one last chicken and waffles).  We had to be home by 1:30 since someone was coming to purchase the tank (also bittersweet).  I never love-loved the tank, but I did enjoy it being in the house.  It was SUPER quiet after it was all removed.

While the tank evacuation was taking place, I worked on some minor packing things.  I went through the DVDs and purged and packed the ones I want to keep.  I put all the Willow Tree figurines in their boxes.  I'm debating if I want to try to sell some of the stuff I separated out or just donate it and be done with it.

I also went through the closet and purged some shit.  A small portion of that box was already bagged for donation, but 95% of this was stuff I decided to let go.  It was difficult.  Things I was not able to let go: 99% of my hoodies.  I think I put one in the donation pile and I didn't really love it.  I tried to be very clear cut about, "Do you love this?  Like LOVELOVE it?"  If I didn't LOVELOVE it and would only wear it to say I wore it so it wouldn't get donate, then it had to go.

After Teh German finished with tank things, he deemed it screen time.  I didn't want to push him (yet) about packing things/going through his stuff, so I let it go.  I separated more stuff for sell?/donate and then listened to my audiobook and played Disney Emoji Blitz while laying on a pile of comforters in a closet.  Was it kinda weird?  Yes.  Did I love it?  Yes.

Also, I'm super sad that I'm about halfway through my book and it's gonna get stolen back from the library before I finish and there's a waitlist so I can't renew it.  /sob.  #MeganProblems.

We had leftovers for dinner and then watched Silicon Valley until it was (past) bedtime.

______________________________________________

A fantastic weekend!  Teh German and I had a date night where we talked about moving things and I finally got to hang out with Teh PT Wife and we had bison filet and we got to see all our people before we go (with the exception of those who have scheduled dinner plans with us).

This week is when the moving ball really starts rolling.  I'm headed to MD with Sandy and Meri on Thursday.  Teh German will join with Pax and Lars-Ludwig and Bagheera on Saturday.  He will go home on Sunday, I will go home on Monday/Tuesday.  I/we will be dog sitting for Teh Bestie/Teh Chief Smartass while they are away for the weekend.  This worked out well since we needed to get the dogs up to MD after they agreed to watch the beasts while we're in Barbados and this eliminated their need for a dog sitter while they are gone.  Also, I will be going into the office on Friday for some things, which is should be a good time.

When I get back to SC, the packing will truly begin.  Without the dogs here, it's less hassle to have things moved around/out.  We will leave for Barbados on the 17th and return on the 24/25th (depending on the situation with American Airlines who have informed us that our flight from Miami to Charleston was cancelled).  After we get back, we will finish any packing for the POD and then pack up our trailer and migrate north for good.

Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly.  I mean, I know it won't and expect no less than 3 breakdowns between now and 30Oct when we're set to close, at least 1 caused by our realtor who makes me have a visceral response anytime she texts us.  #JesusTakeTheWheel.

We got this.
Remember when it was only March and now it's October?  Crazy right?!

Five on Friday #243

EINS - Random Shit

Steph posted this last week and it's everything I haven't been able to put into words for YEARS.

What exactly do we mean when we say Make America Great Again? To return to our lips not coming near the same water fountains, our asses not sitting on the same seats, our kids not going to the same schools, our neighborhoods staying lily white, red lining, Jim Crow, Black bodies being used and discarded, Black labor being valued differently? Was America great in those times? What time do we want to go back to when America was great? The entire time we've been racist since the beginning? The incredible horror we've inflicted on the native people and the land? The time when we fought World War II against fascism? Wait, people are against Antifa now, which essentially means being in support of fascism, so that can't be right. It seems like we want to go back to women dying from back alley abortions too. Is that the time? All of the above times? I don't have enough expletives right now. And to quote something I saw on the Internet last night, fuck off I'm not leaving just because it's unjust and fucked up here. There is work to be done. We cannot change the past but we sure as FUCK should not be going back to any time in it because America was NEVER great for ALL of her people. Act right and stop saying Make America Great Again. Your racism is showing. Work to build a better tomorrow for EVERYONE instead. No fucking exceptions. To see how many white people are invested in upholding this system that disproportionately benefits them, read any comment section on the Internet. The longer we hold on to old ways designed to keep a foot on the neck of Black people (read a book, the criminal justice system was literally designed to do this, and modern day police themselves were born from slave catchers-we need to start ENTIRELY OVER), the more the unrest grows and makes everyone less safe. Change is needed for the well being of Black people, brown people, white people, and police of every color.

THIS.  ALL OF THE THIS.

YOUR RACISM IS SHOWING.
There's nothing you can say to change my mind on this.  There is no meme you can share to make me laugh at this.  And if you support a president who encourages the division of a nation and enables some to openly air their racist opinions and hatred, then you are part of the problem.  This is me saying if you vote for Trump in 2020, you're a racist.  Maybe it wasn't super clear in 2016, but it's super clear now and there is absolutely ZERO excuse.

Apparently, getting older and being an adult means waking up earlier to do shit.  And I don't mean like work shit, I mean like personal shit.  I.e.: Exercise, chores, bathe the dogs.  Things that you know have to be accomplished, but also know that at the end of the day, you do not want to deal with it.

It's crazy how much shit I sometimes accomplish before I sit down at my desk at 0830 (sometimes earlier, sometimes later, get up off me) to start doing work things.

I didn't watch the debate.  I have ZERO regrets.  My mental health and good sleeps are way more important to me than watching something I can skim highlights about the next day if I choose to.  I mostly chose NOT to.  I'm not sorry.  I didn't anticipate anything significant or life changing would come out of the debate and it was exactly the horse and pony show that it was expected to be, based on what I saw online the following morning.

I have 3 different banks that I use.  It's stupid, but I'm stubborn.  I got paid at some point and decided to set up my allotments and decided to switch my savings account bank money to the same bank we have the house account with.  This is all fun and games until I'm trying to move money between accounts.

So anyways, now I have FOUR PayPal accounts, ya know, in case you needed to confirm that I am truly, 100% ridiculous.  Also, setting up new accounts takes time and Jesus needed to take the wheel on that since I'm super impatient.  So I put in no less than 20949293492 confirmation numbers and still I could not transfer money.  Also, the House account bank created 2 checking accounts from my one request and when I called to get one closed I was told I'd have to call back after 24 hours since the system needs time to process.  /facepalmfordays.

I still haven't been able to successfully transfer the money from Paypal into the new account, but it's a work in progress.  Really, why is this so difficult?  And I could have paid for a wire transfer of all the funds, but why deal with that when I can do it for free between my 6 millionty Paypal accounts?

Look, Gentle Readers, I have a SERIOUS problem with using the last of anything.  I have trained myself to replace things before we get to the last one of anything so that way we don't run out of things.  This is not a good method when you are moving.  This way ensures you have more shit to move and that's really the pits.

So I went to the grocery store to pick up a few necessities like eggs, which I eat for breakfast, ok, gosh.. and some Halloween candy to be used for smores instead of just having chocolate bars.  There were so many items I was like, Oo I could pick up this and this and this and had to FORCE myself NOT to grab those items.  Transition is hard.

In addition to saying no at the grocery store, I've been telling myself no about picking up food when I'm out of the house because I'm always tempted when I leave the house to "treat myself".  Not only did we have leftovers at home since I'd cooked consistently this week and it was actually pretty good, but eating out means leftovers last longer, which means I don't need to cook as much, which means food is in our house still when we move out.

Soooo, in making an effort NOT to eat out as a "get out of the house, treat yoself", I am in turn, forcing myself to 1- save money, 2- eat the food at home, 3- forcing myself to cook, all of which means that there will be less food in the house to transport when we finally leave.  It's a long and winding road, thanks for taking it with me.

When your Bestie asks you to pick up some Bath and Body Works hand sanitizer for her from the outlet before you leave Charleston and you go to the website and see they offer things online and then you both go down a rabbit hole, and you finally have this exchange:

We love who we love, loooool.

It's a common cybersecurity mechanism to lock a computer after there is no activity for a certain period of time.  This, unfortunately, makes you go offline.  Soooo.. I've learned to play YouTube videos when I am AFK so I do not go offline when my computer locks.  This wouldn't be an issue if Skype for Business wasn't the way it is and/or if I could download it for my phone and actually be able to sign in.

Teh German did a thing!

With the money he made from selling Suzi and the Bobber and the former trailer, Teh German upgraded Teh Ville with a new covered trailer!  This will make hauling the bikes MUCH better because we won't be AS paranoid that someone is going to steal them AND if we go somewhere there is no covered storage, we will have brought our own covered storage with us.

IN ADDITION... the trailer will be used for storage purposes while we are living with Teh Bestie and Teh Chief Smartass.  This is a decision Teh German has been researching for quite a while now, so him finally pulling the trigger is nice.

I also want to note that he had me come outside to "help" him back it inside the fence and he managed to get it in on the FIRST try.  The only assistance I really offered was telling him when to stop backing up so he didn't run over the HVAC.

I was about to start researching where to purchase moving boxes and did a quick marketplace search (on Teh German's acct, don't be foolish) and saw that someone had posted a LOT of boxes outside of a business for freeizzle within the hour.  You better bet I high-tailed it right the fuck over there and filled up Willow like a boss.

Teh German informed me that they are kinda small and I explained to him the larger the box the heavier it is to move.  Also, most of these boxes are the same size, which is super helpful when it comes time to Tetris the shit out of the POD.

Speaking of the POD.  It arrived today.

Teh German and I both watched with wonder while the POD was unloaded off the truck with a portable crane which almost literally blew our minds.  We had been curious how it was going to be moved and we found out.  Also, how cool is a portable crane?  Engineering is marvelous!

Pulled out my tech writer skillz to create a standard document for the GEGR application reviewers to fill out since the current process is a bit finicky.  AND THEN my people let me down and didn't even seem to care that I did it so fabulously!  Siiiiiiiiiigh.  YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

I won't lie.  It felt good to do that kind of editing.

I've been given some long term research goals for our department.  It's kinda scary because it's not a subject I'm deeply educated in so it will require some learning.  But at the same time, it is a SUPER interesting subject for me, so that shouldn't be difficult.

Also, I'm that nerd that is legitimately interested in data and making it work for the user.  I get EXCITED about the data and learning it and using it and I really think my new coworkers underestimated my passion.  While training with one of my coworkers this week, I explained to him that I really enjoyed learning about the stuff he works on and that I wasn't even kissing his ass, I had a REAL interest in the system and making it better and trying to find ways to implement the suggestions he makes since he's the primary user who manipulates the data.

Also, I discovered a data dictionary Thursday and it details all the attributes in the key tables and I almost jizzed my pants I was so jazzed about it.  If none of that meant anything to you, let me translate: I found some nerdy shit that made me excited.

Because of all the weird race deferrals, I have NO idea what races I'm still signed up for or what has been deferred.  Particularly all of the Rock n Roll races I signed up for, which is super annoying since that was a LOT of dollas.

Also, I had to give my running spreadsheet a facelift since I will no longer be in Charleston next year for local races, I went ahead and deleted those that were tentative sign ups.  I'll be seeking out DC/MD races, if they are held.

This is all because Charleston Marathon announced that the race in January will be virtual.  This makes me happy and sad.  Happy that I won't have to coordinate coming back for the race, sad because I won't have a reason to come to CHS for the race.  BOOOOOOOOO.  Also, I'm not overly excited about the medal or the rest of the package.  They are including a River Dogs (baseball) ticket.  Guess what I'll never fucking use.  A baseball ticket.  Ugh.

My knees have started to hurt when I run.  Any distance.  This is an indicator that I need new running shoes.  Things I do not want to have to buy: New running shoes.  It feels like I just bought new running shoes... and then I remember that I ran almost 100 miles in June and that kinda explains why I might need new shoes.  Le siiiiiigh.

ZWEI - Money Shit

-Dog shampoo for Sandy... again
-Dog food when I realized my autoship was delayed because my scheduling considerations were unrealistic
-Willow maintenance
-minimal groceries.  Absolute necessities: eggs and candy for the gathering on Saturday.
-Thanksgiving day 5k with Teh Bestie and Teh MD Native.

DREI - From My Phone Shit

When your Bestie goes AWOL and Googly says she's at home and she's not responding to any of your correspondence (work emails or texts) and so you message her on the hour for a while, then every few hours.. and then you finally decide that if she doesn't respond by dinnertime, you'll reach out to her people because ZERO TO DOOM is literally the way my brain works.

Full Paper Jacket for my lady bits appointment.
Also, if you are one of those people who is miserable and shy about getting your privates medically inspected, it's time to get over it.  Your business ain't nothin' they ain't seen before.  Slide all the way down and spread em and get it over with while laughing because life is short and ain't nobody got time for unnecessary misery.

Someone is texting my work phone like they know me.
They do not know me, nor do I know them.
And now it's been so long that I don't know how to tell them that I am not the person they are looking for.
Also, what horrible person didn't tell them that they changed their number if they were close enough to get relative updates?!

Office situation: Meri on the couch, Sandy on the bed, Pax on a couch

This makes me tense up every time (because I'm always afraid Meri is gonna be snarky) but it melts my heart so much.

FÜNF - Things that made me happy this week

  1. Free motherfuckin' boxes.
  2. 2 runs this week, which also meant 2 dog walking sessions this week.
  3. Sandy RUNNING ME 1/3 of her route home.  She'd have ran me 1/2 of the route if I had been able to keep up with her galloping, but it was just too much.
  4. That salmon I cooked on Tuesday.  It was so delicious and teleworking = heating up fish leftovers and no one bitching about it.
  5. Getting assigned my first GEGR application to process.
  6. NOT watching the debate.
  7. Hosting a gathering.  Yes, even though it's during a pandemic.  I'm mildly stressed about that, but the payoff will be that we get to see our people before we leave.
  8. NOT eating out despite many opportunities.  1- we're going out this weekend.  2- forced to cook.  3- $$ saved.  #AdultingFuckingMaster
  9. Scheduling dinners with people who we won't see on Saturday.
  10. Leftover birthday cake from Meri's birthday last weekend with lemon icing.

Pack Up + Go: Chicago! {Review}

For our anniversary this year, we opted to do a Pack Up + Go trip.  Friends of ours went on a trip and they highly recommended it, so I was like, why not?  Teh German was like, here's why not: you pay someone to plan your trip for you.. and I'm like, "EXACTLY."  Then he said, "We could just plan it ourselves."  And I laughed and laughed and caught my breath and laughed some more and finally choked out, "You mean, I could plan it."  He glared, my point was made, and then we filled out the form to start the process.

Our friends had explained the process and said that if they did another trip through Pack Up + Go, they would opt to fly somewhere instead of drive.  Makes sense, as we live in Charleston, SC and there's very few places worth visiting within driving distance.  So, we chose to fly.  This increased our budget.

Ultimately, we decided on a budget of $750 per person, which is $1500 for 2 people.  That's a lot more than I wanted to spend on a weekend, but I didn't have to plan it and adventures and shit, so fine.

If you're less interested in the process and more interested in the things we did, check out this link:

The process goes like this:

Pick your category.

Set your number of travelers and budget per person.

Fill out the info form.

Then you wait... for like, half your life or something to pass until it's a week before your trip.  And you tell everyone you know about this awesome trip you are taking, but you don't know where you're going and everyone is like DAFUQ?  Then you explain that's part of the appeal, but mostly the fact that you don't have to plan anything.

A week prior to your trip, you will receive an email with generalized information about your destination and your anxiety and excitement will start to build.

Honestly, I didn't bother to pack until the night prior because I wanted to wait for the updated forecast before making life choices.

There might be marital strife regarding the opening of the envelope.. or at least there was in our case.  I was chomping at the bit to open the envelope.  I wanted to wait, but I didn't.  We finally settled on opening the envelope the morning of the trip.  Teh German got pissed when I brought the envelope upstairs to potentially open it before we even went downstairs.  Siiiigh.  We ended up opening it right before we left, after I made the argument that I wanted to know where we were going so that way if we hadn't packed properly, we'd be able to grab stuff we needed.  Teh German struggles to argue with logic, so it was agreed.

Then I let Teh German open the envelope, poor life choice, because he took his time and I ripped his head off when he couldn't get the cardstock apart to see the destination page and I said, "JUST OPEN THE FOLDER ALREADY!"  Patience is not my strong suit, ok?  The envelope had been in our house for a week, to watch him stand there with the answer to the question we had been asked for an entire month right there and not just DO IT was physically painful for me.  I probably even grabbed at the stuff to do it myself.  I'm probably the worst.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  IDK.

Some of the contents of our folder:

Satisfied that I had packed everything for our location, we headed to the airport.  Once we got checked in and made it to our gate, we sorted through the folder.

We had:
-hotel reservation information
-tickets for a show
-a dinner reservation info sheet
-a few pages of facts about Chicago
-transportation info card
-3 pages of suggested things to do
-some other etc stuff

I knew that not all of our time would be planned, but I guess I expected more of our time to be planned.

From the suggested things to do, it didn't seem to be taken into account that it was a whopping ~35°F outside, which really eliminated a lot of "go check out this park" or "walk to ____".  Don't get me wrong, I said in the questionnaire that we liked the cold, but like, not to just be outside for extended periods of time without having an activity or purpose.  There's literally only so much cold a body can handle while the winds are whipping off the lake.

I also said that we were interested in breweries, cocktail bars, and eating.  Many places were suggested for us, but we cannot literally eat and drink all day.  We ended up doing breakfast most days, but not lunch, and then only kinda being hungry by dinner time.  If we stopped for drinks during the day, we ended up pushing dinner back because we weren't hungry.  It was weird and as people who thrive on a schedule, it was kinda difficult.  That's the downside about good food places, I want to eat all the things, and I cannot.  By the last day, we ended up sharing a meal because we were so full from eating other things.

I was disappointed that most of the suggested activities were food/beverage things.  I know that seems ironic since I had said we were interested in food/beverage, but we couldn't take advantage of most of the suggestions because we took a few of the suggestions and ended up being too full to take more of the suggestions.

Of the few non-food/beverage suggestions there were (music/comedy shows/museums/visit parks/boat tour), they provided tickets for a comedy show and we did the Chicago touristy things (Millennium Park/Navy Pier) and went to a suggested museum (which was an absolute blast) and did the boat tour (very interesting, although it was a bit chilly, which we tolerated without complaint until all the bridges kept dripping melting snow/ice on us as we passed under).  The only activities we did that weren't suggestions were the Gangsters and Ghosts tour (win) and going to the Maxwell Street Market (flop).

My goal had been to just go along with the suggested plans, but it was impossible because it was SO MUCH FOOD/BEVERAGE.  Truly.  Click on those photos and zoom in to read the sheets.  I spent at least an hour Saturday morning going through the provided suggestions and on my phone Googling things to do in Chicago that weren't food/beverage.  By Sunday afternoon, we had run out of things we really wanted to do.  We ended up spending hours at a brewery utilizing their free wifi and splitting a burger for dinner until it was time for us to head to the airport.  There were a few reasons for this.

We went to the planetarium and it didn't take nearly as long as we expected it to, so we had a lot more time to kill than we anticipated.  We didn't want to get to the airport too early since the beer options were better (and cheaper) by our hotel.  Additionally, we were tired.  It's exhausting packing as much as possible into 3 days.  Our schedule was wonky because our eating schedule was off and sleeping in beds that are not Teh Cloud is difficult.  I know that sounds "princess-y", but I'm just being honest.

So my overall opinion?

I would recommend Pack Up + Go to someone who wants a surprise, but personally, this was a once and done type of thing for me.  I had to plan more than I wanted to.  I wanted a few days worth of suggested agendas laid out.. but I guess I should caveat that with, reasonable agendas.  There's only so much food/beverage this human can consume.

We ended up spending a LOT on Lyft rides (~$160) because public transportation is overwhelming for me and Husband didn't want to figure it out either, I guess, because he never suggested taking the L for anything.  Our hotel was over a mile away from the touristy areas of downtown Chicago and I've watched enough Shameless to know that I'm not walking around Chicago in the dark.  Also, places like the Museum of Science and Industry and planetarium aren't close to the touristy areas NOR was it close to our hotel.

I did try to arrange our schedule so that things we did were kinda close to each other to minimize on Lyft costs, but by Sunday, we were having to debate on what to do in relation to having to pay for a Lyft to a destination/back vs not do anything and that's when I knew I was over it.  Having a rental car wouldn't have solved the problem because 1) traffic was horrible, 2) parking costs would have probably been about the same as the Lyft rides.

Was it worth it for the experience?
Yes.

Would I do it again?
No.

Total Money Spent:

Cost Activity
$1500 hotel, plane tickets, comedy show tickets
$160 Lyft
$50 Friday breakfast
$60 Architecture boat tour
$25 Afternoon brewery stop
$75 Friday dinner
$20 Pre-comedy show drinks
$15 Comedy show beverages
$40 Saturday brunch
$40 Museum of Science and Industry
$50 Lou Malnati's pizza
$60 Gangsters and Ghosts tour
$65 Breakfast in bed at the hotel
$32 Navy Pier Ferris Wheel
$45 Navy Pier time killing snacks/noms
$40 Planetarium tickets
$45 Afternoon brewery/dinner stop
$30 Airport beverages

$~2350

Total $$ Spent (+/-)

So yeah, it was A LOT of money for a weekend.  We had a good time though, so it was a worthy anniversary trip.  I can say that I would have never picked that hotel, so that was a pro and a con.  I am a Yelp Elite, so I am always using Yelp to determine our places to eat, I even do it in Charleston, so I probably would have ended up at a few of the places they suggested anyways.

I think the next time I want to go on a surprise trip, I'm going to trade planning services with a friend that knows us and our preferences.  I can still be surprised, the cost will be less, and they will know us personally to know that we can't eat all.day.long.

FYI: I was in no way compensated for this review, but I mean, if someone wanted to compensate me with free travels, I wouldn't say no.

Five on Friday #193

EINS - Random Shit

-My #1 complaint about Goodreads, which I absolutely love, is that users are allowed to rate before prior to their release.  I'm sure this has something to do with ARCs, but I really wish that wasn't the case.  When I'm hunting for my next book, I sort my Want to Read shelf by the rating and seeing books that aren't even published at the top because annoying bitches have already posted their 5 star reviews for a book that's not going to be published for another 5+ years (I have a specific sci-fi series in mind for this example) makes me stabby.

-The most inconvenient thing about laser hair removal is having to shave ahead of time.  Ugggghh.

-Teh German tried to tell me that I HAD to contact my host person after I got the information on Monday and I was quick to inform him that I did NOT have to do any such thing.  When I explained that I wanted to do other things first he got butt-hurt.  I didn't care.  I know part of it is that he's excited for me, but I feel like Rome activities are torturing me at this point because the details haven't been finalized and I am TIRED of thinking about it.  I want it to be done.  I want it to be done more than I need to contact a stranger who I'm going to be living with.

-Also, talking to strangers gives me anxiety.  When Teh German suggested that I contact the host person to introduce myself, my stomach tied up in knots.  If you know me in real life, you'll know that I'm pretty far from shy and I'm mostly outgoing (unless it's before 1000)... butttt initiating contact, and with a stranger no less, makes me 150% more awkward than I already am.  Initiating contact with a stranger in a different language?  Not interested at this time.  Try again later.

-After much mental exertion... Italy is 100% planned.  Every minute is not planned, but that's how we prefer it.  Also, our last full day there is completely open so that way we can decide what we want to do.  If we want to go see something again or go find something we've heard about while we're touring around, we can.  If we want to sleep in and fuck off, we can do that too.

Sorry, you can't really read that unless you click it.

-I almost planned a discotheque adventure on Saturday night, but remembered Twitch McGee in my bed on Saturday night and opted out of that situation since there won't be a guest bedroom for me to escape to.  #ChooseYourBattles

-I'm super happy for you if you sell some pyramid scheme shit.  Truly, I am.  But that does not mean I want to buy it or have 90% of our interactions be about whatever product you are selling.  I'm glad you're doing great and you're a top sales person and you're about to earn a vacation or a car or whatever the company gives you for piddling their stuff... REALLY.  But I'm not interested.  I'm cheap AF so the product probably costs too much for me to buy without mental anguish or without the excuse that I'm buying to support my friend.  And if it's a skin product, I'm probably allergic.  That's not an excuse, that's valid.  I'm allergic to life.  I'm sensitive... like me in general and my skin.  I can only use certain laundry detergents.  I also have a routine figured out and while I still have a millionty blackheads that I've just learned to love, I don't want to break my entire face out to "test" your products... also, I'm probably allergic.  Yep, even if it's free, not interested.

-On Tuesday night, after the pharmacies were closed, I realized I only had 1 month's supply of my hot flashes BC.  I left on Thursday.  I needed to solve the problem Wednesday.  I called CVS when they opened and I was told that there were no refills on my prescription.

EXCUSE ME, WHAT?  We just went through this shit 2 months ago getting it all sorted out and transferring it to CVS.  Before I called Teh Running Bestie with my breakdown woes, I did some quick problem solving and remembered that CVS was supposed to transfer the prescription from Walmart.  When I had spoken to the CVS pharmacist, she said the prescription had been transferred over from my insurance's online fulfillment service... So in a true fuck you move, I called Walmart and asked if they still had the script on file (they did), and asked them to fill it (they did).  I picked it up at lunch time with my $25/month coupon and gave CVS the finger as I drove past.  I hate, hate, hateeee health insurance and all the woes that come with it, and this is just another nail in the coffin.  I should also be angry that the script costs $375 for a 3 month supply without the coupon.. but I've already lived through that rage.

PS.  I still called Teh Running Bestie to vent about the drama.

-We held an impromptu farewell dinner at Willie Jewell's on Wednesday night.

-IDK why, but everyone kept asking me if I had packed yet starting on Sunday.  Like, yall, I don't leave until Thursday, why you Russian me?  Since I knew Wednesday night was going to be filled with dinner and playoff hockey, I packed on Tuesday night, like the motherfucking badass boss bitch that I am.

What I thought was going to be too much clothes turned out to be just right.  ANNNDDD my bag weighed 43-44 pounds (max of 50 lbs), which is MAGICAL... and probably has a lot to do with the 3 cereal boxes that were a request from Teh Running German.

latergram: My 2nd checked bag cost me $100 because Aer Lingus sucks in this regard.. and really, only this regard.  But still.  What am I going to do when you tell me that an hour and a half before my rescheduled, late flight comes in?  Take my money, assholes.

-Traveling overnight on Thursday and arriving on to Germany on Friday really threw off my schedule.  I thought it was Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday... in the same day.  Let's blame sleep deprivation.

-When I left Haus for the airport, I had a notification from JetBlue that might flight was delayed, but when I checked the app, it didn't say anything about it.  After some debating, I headed to the airport anyways.  Lucky that I did, the JetBlue check in dude was able to get me on an earlier (but also delayed) flight so I could make my connection from Boston to Dublin.  If he hadn't, I would have definitely missed all my connections since my original flight didn't land in Boston until 3 hours after my connecting flight departed.

-My flights were exhausting.  My Boston to Dublin flight was full and I was seated in the middle section, in the middle of the row, so we were all squished in together.  Thankfully, my row mates were cool and we chatted and did our own thing and tried to sleep and commiserated about the loud motherfucker in the back who spoke 6 of the 8 hours (if not more) we were in flight.  I did get to nap some on my flight from Charleston to Boston and Dublin to Düsseldorf.  And then.. I napped again after arriving to Auntie P's.. then again in the evening (by accident) while she was making dinner.

-Going to non-American grocery stores is always one of the biggest highlights of overseas travel for me.  So much joy.  So many different things.  I love it!

-I had forgotten about Mezzo Mix.. and by forgotten I mean, I love Mezzo Mix in Germany since we don't have it in American unless I make a homemade version.  I was so quick to grab a bottle off the shelf that I didn't even notice that it was Mezzo Mix "Zero"... uuugghh.  Whatever.  Hopefully, Mezzo Mix has enough caffeine to be a coffee substitute since I won't be drinking coffee while I'm in Germany (because the only reason I drink coffee in America is for the Peppermint Mocha creamer).

-I have a harder time understanding english-speaking Irish people than any German-speaking people.

ZWEI - Money Shit

-All the touristy things in Italy.  Like really.  ALL of them.  Yes, my credit card is weeping.  #YOLO bitches.
-All the Italy lodging things.
-Willow's oil change
-Travel insurance.. I think.  I mean, I paid for it and it's good for the year, but when I got the form it said the insurance wasn't applied, but I'm not sure if that's because I had to send in the stuff to confirm that I was a student.  IDK, it was weird.. and it takes 10 days to be mailed, and I'm already gone.. soooo hopefully if I need it, I can access it online.  I'll have Teh German deliver it when he comes across the pond.
-My final $5 Verizon bill.  I'm not really sure why there was a charge since I cancelled the plan on the first day of my billing cycle at 0630 in the morning so I hadn't even used any services.. buttt whatever.
-Pew pew lazor sessions.
-Gas for Bagheera.  This is significant since usually I'm with Teh German on the bike when he needs gas, so I just top off... except I had to do it myself this time since we haven't stopped to get gas recently.  #MeganProblems
-Facebook donation to a SHUG dog who had a freak accident who I not-so-secretly love.
-Snacks for the gathering Saturday night.
-Pizza for the gathering Saturday night.
-Travel meals/drinks while flying.  That includes my pre-flight adult beverage and dinner at Wahlburgers in Boston and a bottled water out of sheer dehydrated desperation after landing in Dublin.

DREI - From My Phone Shit

Uncircumcised bully stick.
Alright alright alright.

A few weeks ago, I had a breakdown over the fact that my favorite type of sausage was NO WHERE to be found in any store in Charleston (that I looked).  So when I found them at Bi-Lo a few weeks ago on markdown (for reasons that I assumed had to do with their disappearance for forever), I stocked up and put 10 rolls in the freezer.
Turns out, it was a false alarm and now my sage sausage is back in stock like normal.  🤷

Why are these "smiles" acceptable, Duolingo?
This shit is like when you show the dentist your overbite.
Everything about this makes me uncomfortable.

This is Mer's favorite Neighborhood Watch Post.
Thanks, Bro, for fucking up my window sill.....

Pax's birthday is May 18th, and I'll be gone and the Fam will be in MD for the GEGR picnic, so I gave Meri and Pax their birthday toys early (both dogs always get a toy each on each other's birthdays).

He didn't like it when I would touch his bunny.
He actually relocated twice so I'd stop fucking with him.
Sorry not sorry, Bra, you're stuck with me for LYYFFEEE.

I was surprised when I saw that Meri got a chance with the new bunny.

Literally, there were children immediately surrounding me, but not in my row on my flight from Charleston to Boston.
FFFFMMMLLL.
The rest of my flights were relivately childfree.

I had filled my water bottle before we departed and didn't think to depressurize it when we got into the air...
and so my water bottle peed all over me while I napped.
#RUDE

You might know him as Sheldon, but I knew him long before as "the knight" in Garden State.

VIER - From the Internet Shit

FÜNF - Things that made me happy this week

  1. Finally starting my Germany adventure.
  2. Getting 95% of my shit packed on Tuesday night.
  3. Carolina Hurricanes WIIIIINNNNNN (again, #3 for this round).
  4. Well wishes from friends before I left the country.
  5. Family who take me in and don't judge me when I fall asleep on their couch after I've said I will help with dinner... sorry Auntie P.
  6. Mezzo Mix.
  7. No flight delays.
  8. Get this post up on Friday, despite travel exhaustion and jet lag.
  9. Getting to talk with Teh German Friday (his) afternoon before I went to bed.  I miss that guy.
  10. Teh German sneaking a sappy card with a LONG letter in it into my suitcase and completely surprising me when I found it.  Then, I cried when I read it.  For real though, I miss my Husband.  PS.  I left him 3 notes to find.  I won't pretend I don't love it when we do similar sappy things without each other knowing at the same time.

Happy Friday, Gentle Readers.
