Weekend Review {5/17}

Have I mentioned lately how awesome Company is?  Because seriously, Company is awesome and I have pretty awesome bosses who are extremely flexible with me and my neediness.

But how did they come through this time?
Welll.. just sit down and I'll tell you how.

So on Thursday, Teh Frozen Lover called me to ask if I wanted to go to Disney World and it would be a surprise to Teh Running Bestie.  One of her friends had backed out at the (very) last minute and there was an available bed space and lodging would be free.  In fact, they even offered to pick me up on the way to Orlando from MD!  Immediately my brain went into overdrive..  It was something like this: HOW DO I MAKE THIS WORK???

My first call was to Teh German to make sure he wasn't going to be upset if I went to Disney for a few days without him.  I know, I know, I said no Disney in 2017, but when certain opportunities fall into your lap, you just don't say no.  Ok?  ANNNDD this trip (and the MD trip) are my last hoorahs before my surgery, soooooooo #reasoned.

After Teh German said it was ok to desert him for The Mouse, I consulted Google Calendar and realized that there was no way I could have them pick me up.  We had plans on Friday and Saturday nights.  I decided I'd just head down on my own on Sunday.

I talked to my boss at work to make sure that I could be out on Mon and Tues without causing too many waves.  My compromise was to work a full day on Friday (which is the most extreme type of work grossness) and over the weekend.  This actually worked out really well for me and I was able to get soooo much accomplished!  When the nerds aren't giving me a deadline 2 hours from the time they send me a document, it's super awesome!

While it was supposed to be a surprise for Teh Running Bestie, it didn't work out that way and we ended up telling her on Saturday evening that I was coming down.  So here's an "abbreviated" weekend review since so much has went down.  You're welcome.

FRIDAY

I worked.  It was exactly like you're imagining.  I did leave the office early to pick up hockey tickets and a prescription from the Ortho for more meds and to Willie Jewell's to pick up a birfday gift certificate for Teh PT Wife since it was her birfday.  I got home and was able to do some work and pack and then I had to run back out and pick up my meds and my groceries from Walmart.  I did the pickup since I was getting non-fresh (aka produce) items, and it was super easy.  I'd do it again.

a sweet rose from Walmart.  mmkay.

I headed back home and Teh German arrived home soon after.  Then we departed with Teh PT Wife/Husband in tow for birfday celebrations: dinner at PF Chang's, an improv show at Theater 99, then hookah at Tabbuli.

me, Teh PT Wife, Teh Dental Hygienist

Teh Dental Hygienist got to tell everyone about her day and be part of the show!

We ended up coming home after the improv show to smoke hookah since Tabbuli wanted to charge a $5 cover for each person and we weren't interested in that.

SATURDAY

Saturday was delightfully rainy and we slept in some, but I got up and tried to accomplish some work.  We had an appointment at noon with our wedding planner and we made some great progress on table centerpieces and decorations.  It was raining, so it was a perfect day for napping.. except that I had to do work.  Boooo.

Received this message from Papa G saying our German invites had arrived and he'd be delivering them, woot!

I was able to accomplish a lot of work though since I wasn't having to deal with other people changing the documents at the same time as me.  I had planned for everyone to meet at Community Pizza House at 5 for dinner before the Stingrays game.  It ended up working out perfectly since we were able to be at the coliseum at 6:30.  Teh German was able to grab a beer AND be in his seat for the National Anthem (we like to judge the performers) and the puck drop (which he tends to miss due to getting a beer).

Teh PT Kid was SUPER into the game and I am pleased that we have created a new hockey fan.  #Ididthat  Sadly, we lost, but we did at least trrrryyy to win by the end and we only lost by 1 point.  When we got home, we decided to stay home and go to bed, rather than socialize.  It didn't help that I still hadn't packed for Disney.

SUNDAY

Originally, I had planned on leaving SC early in the AM to get to Orlando about mid-afternoon.  But then I learned that Teh Running Bestie had bought backstage passes to Universal Studios, which meant that I could leave Charleston later to arrive closer to when Teh Running Bestie would be leaving the park.

I took my turn to release Meri and ended up staying downstairs to finish up some work I hadn't completed on Saturday.  After finishing, I headed back upstairs to snuggle with Teh German.  He ended up leaving around 12:30 to go on a ride with his "Biker Gang" and I finished packing and laid down for a nap before finally hitting the road around 2:30.

I did stop for dinner at Willie Jewell's in Georgia to compare it to our Willie Jewell's and it was satisfactory, even if they didn't let me get bread pudding as a side.  I made it to Orlando a little bit before 9pm.  Teh Frozen Lover and gang were already at the hotel so I was able to go inside and hang out with them while waiting on Teh Running Bestie to get back from Universal.

After Teh Running Bestie arrived back to the hotel, we all socialized for a bit, had a serious girly moment when 6 ladies were all huddled on 2 full size beds together giggling, and finally decided to call it a night since we were headed to Magic Kingdom (MK) the following day.

MONDAY

We were all loaded into the car by 0830.  We made it into MK by 10, after a bit of a wait for the ferry.  Our first stop was Space Mountain since we didn't have fast passes and the line was only 30 minutes.

The homemade 101 Dalmations ears made an appearance so my brain wouldn't be squeezed our entire time at MK.

Teh Running Bestie's first time riding Space Mountain!!!!

We did a lot of walking around and riding short line rides.  Rather than try to recall all that we did, I'll just share the photos.

We waited on Gaston and I asked him if he got his "smoulder" from Flynn Rider and then said that I'd heard every last inch of him was covered in hair.  I was actually going to say, "Every last inch?" But thought that might be too much, instead, I groped his fake pecs and he told me, "This isn't a grab and greet!"

After, we met Merida from Brave.

Obligatory photo of the castle.

It was stupid hot, because Florida, so we decided to get Dole Whip (yay for them finally making the Dole Whip stand not in a tiny freakin' space).  While Teh Frozen Lover and I waited in line, a Cast Member came by and asked how we were doing and what my name was.  I told her and she filled out a form for FREE Dole Whips for us!  No idea why, but this girl isn't complaining!

Fuck yassss, Dole Whip Float all to myself.

We used a fast pass on the Haunted Mansion (which is totally overrated if you ask me).

On our way to somewhere, we saw the midday parade going through and we HAD to get a photo of the 3 Fairies!

Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather

Maleficent

Seven Dwarfs

While some of us rode Thunder Mountain, others waited in the shade and watched this guy "paint" on the walk way.  Totally cool.

Coke sends special bottles to Disney World.
#itsthelittlethings #makinmagichappen

We had dinner reservations at Liberty Hall at 6:30, which was perfect.  Everything was delicious, as expected.

Silly faces!

De-fucking-ssert.  YYYAAASSSS.

After dinner, we headed towards the Castle to find seats to watch the night show/fireworks.  To our dismay, half the park had already taken all the good seats!  Ugh.  I did manage to find a spot for us a little further back than I would have liked, but we had something to lean against, which was most important since we were exhausted.  We adopted a "grandmother" and "grandfather" (an older couple who were nearby) as our own and Gramps helped me defend our spot from people who were trying to squat in our place while the other ladies were shopping down Main Street.

Gramps was part bouncer, part racist.  He was vocal about both jobs.
Awwwkkkwarddd.

I was pleased with our adopted grandparents until Gramps said how stupid it was that someone had proposed at Disney World and well.. I didn't have much to say after that.. Mostly because I didn't want to be rude to the people who would be neighbors with us for the next hour and a half.

Obligatory lit up castle selfie!

Approximately one mabillionty photos of the new night show, Happily Ever After, which made me cry like a little bitch.

After the show, we headed to Main Street to take care of any last minute shopping and get a group photo in front of the castle, which we hadn't done all day.  Whhhhhhaaatttt??

Besties!

IDK who these strangers were, but they were trying to do the "prom pose" so I posed them, then took a photo with them!
Such good sports.  I love awesome people.

Exhausted, we made the trek back to the car via ferry and tram ride, then finally made it back to the hotel room where we all promptly showered and passed the eff out.  Seriously, I feel asleep with the lights on and that never ever happens.  I was TIRED.

TUESDAY

Tuesday, we mixed it up.  Teh Running Bestie had planned to take her nice back to Universal, and I tagged along.  Since Niece had a magic Harry Potter wand, they let me do some of the wand activities and we rode a few rides before taking the Hogwarts Express to Islands of Adventure for lunch and more rides.

Minion ride!

Doing magic!

The trrrraaiiinnnnnn

Obligatory Hogwarts Castle selfie!

We met the Grinch.. and whoever that other not Cat in the Hat character is, lol.

I finally got to ride the Hulk coaster again and it was everything I knew I needed.

#exactly

We ended up leaving Universal around 3 to meet the rest of the gang at Disney Springs for (more) shopping and dinner.

If Gloria (from Modern Family) can walk around in Minnie slippers, I felt like I could too.
Teh Running Bestie said I wasn't allowed to wear these for the wedding.  She's a real Debbie Downer.

A style of ears I had never seen before!
#mandatoryduckface

Mike and Sully!!!!

GEGR friends at Disney!!!

This lady ground up 3 bags of coffee for me to bring home to Teh German.

Teh Frozen Lover has some dietary issues, so the sous chef came from the kitchen to speak with her!
Disney is awesome for their ability to serve all dietary needs.

This is our server, Dylan, who endured our my shenanigans like a pro and joked along with us throughout our meal.

After dinner, we picked up a smores crepe for dessert to share, then we spend some more money and then it was finally time to call it a night.

When we got back to the hotel, my feet were so stinky that I rushed Niece out of the shower so I could shower and wash my stinky feet.  I rarely have stinky feet, so now I am paranoid about it.

After my shower, I packed up all my stuffs so it was ready to be loaded into the car the following morning (at 0530).  It was another night that as soon as my head hit the pillow I was out like a light.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday morning, we were out of the hotel by 0600, which was when Teh Running Bestie had announced we were leaving.  After stopping by McDonald's so I could grab breakfast, we were on the road, dealing with Orlando/I-4 morning traffic.  We hit a bit more traffic in Jacksonville, but after that, we were in the clear.  We made a few pit stops for bathroom breaks (I drank 2 huge sweet teas.... #sorrynotsorry) and we stopped for lunch.  Once we reached SC, traffic got super tangly because of this stupid fucking boat:

Shortly before I passed the boat, Teh Running Bestie had said they needed to make an emergency stop and that I should continue on without them.  I put the pedal to the metal and made it back to Charleston shortly before 1:00.

After greeting Meri, who was extra excited to see me, I set about catching up on work.  Roux's Humom stopped by mid-afternoon to pick up Meri for a play session and I surprised her by being home.  I worked on work things for a bit and eventually Meri was returned and Teh German came home!

I was looking forward to a quiet evening, but we had a community meeting that Teh German wanted to attend.  When we got home, we did a pack walk with the beasts.  I was super exhausted and passed on hanging out at Teh PT Neighbor's house because I still needed to finish up the laundry and pack for MD..... which we were leaving for on Thursday.

Continuation of a crazy, completely by the seat-of-my-pants week...

Shit Teh German Said #9

www.canIdecideanotherday.com

M: Are you going to watch YouTube videos tonight?
T: I don't know.  What are you doing?
M: Well, I need to shower and go business and I thought about starting a new show called Parks and Recreation tonight, but I need to watch at least 3 episodes and I just don't think we'll have time because I'm going to take a "Teh German" amount of time in the bathroom.
T: Yeah.  I understand.  I'll watch my videos.

T (watching a snowboarder video): This guy is crazy doing all the tricks.
M: Teh Running Bestie knows all about celebrities and you know all about the popular snow sport people and I'm over here like, "Did you see that thing on Facebook with the dog?"
T: Or memes on Facebook.  Did you see that new meme?
M: Which one?
Teh German doesn't respond.
M: Ohhhhhhh. (cackles)
T: Anyways, you know all about dogs and Disney.
M: At least I bring something to the table.
T: You always bring something to the table.

M (singing Mulan tunes): "Now I really wish that I knew how to swimmm!"
T: I'm not a Little Mermaid.
M: That was from Mulan.
T: It's always about the mermaid.

M: Don't close that, I'm going back out there.
T: You can close doors?
M: And I can shatter glass ceilings.  I just don't do it when you're around so I don't scare you off.
T: Like with your singing?

M: Do you have any suggestions about what to eat for dinner this week?
T: What about white sauce spaghetti?
M: Uhh... what is...  Ohhhh, you mean alfredo.
T: Yeah, white sauce spaghetti.

T: What are you doing?
M: Teh PT Child is coming by for his pennies.  We're going to be penniless.
T: But Penney arrives on Thursday.
M: Then we'll be Penney-ful.
T: Way better than being pitiful.

While outside around the fire, we notice Meri playing with something in the yard and realize it was a frog.  I ask Teh German to go get the shovel to toss the frog over the fence.  He does and is successful.
T: That was his highest jump ever.

M: Teh German needs a lot of room with his football field length arm span.
T: I'm an eagle, I need my freedom.

Five on Friday #108

EINS

Random updates:

  • I ordered from Walmart grocery this week and did the pick up option.  I'm hoping this revolutionizes my life.  Or at least saves me the effort of having to walk up and down aisles trying to find random shit.  I'll still pick out my own produce, kthx.
  • I got a new computer at work.  I was told it was an emergency spare.  By that I mean, I think it got lost and they just found it in the move and now I get an upgrade.  I'm not sure if I like it or not because it doesn't have a number keypad AND it's a different charger than my home laptop (which was super convenient when I'd telework).  Maybe this will be the motivation I need to start saving/looking for a new home laptop (that isn't broken and will actually close without making me worry my screen will never light up again)....
  • Next week is MD!!!  We're definitely going, even if only so Teh German can drive a Gator at the GEGR picnic.  I'm super pumped to get to hang out with Teh Running Bestie and all my other GEGR peeps.
  • I have a feeling there are documents that I've worked on that haven't been submitted.  This isn't really a problem except for the fact that I am often rushed to complete my part of the review process "in a timely manner" (aka rushed/only given a few hours) and this not only stresses me out, it means that I do a "good enough for government work" job when I could be taking my time and doing a thorough review.  #Imtheonewiththeproblem
  • I'm 100% certain that sitting at work is causing my hip to hurt worse and it's also causing my back to not stay aligned and I hurt and it sucks.
  • I streamed the World of Warcraft soundtrack this morning through the tv in the work space and there was some push back on principle, but not because the music was bad.  That's what I thought, bitches.  It even sparked some conversation about gaming (which isn't surprising since I work with nerds).
  • It's going to be an exciting weekend with neighbor-friends!
    • Tonight is Teh PT Wife's birfday celebration and we're going to PF Chang's and to an improv show and then to smoke hookah!  I'm super pumped and I already need a nap to make it through the evening.
    • Saturday we are meeting with our wedding coordinator/planner and I organized a group outing to watch the Stingrays game.
    • Sunday is a wild card.

ZWEI

Dog things:

  • Meri's wellness visit was good enough.  She was super anxious, but otherwise, she checked out well and didn't have to get any shots this year (woot!).  I did get a prescription for some anti-anxiety meds for her, specifically for car rides.

  • Phil not being with us meant that I saved $200.  Except for the fact that he got the last word, of course, when the receptionist said I had a $37 charge and we both remembered that it was for a urinalysis done on Phil 2 weeks before he died.  Good job, stickin' it to me in your favorite way from the Bridge, Pal.....
  • Meri was upgraded to entire house access when she's home alone this week (and until she decided to destroy something).  This coincided with a new anti-anxiety medication, which I'm giving her this week to ease with the transition.  After that, it will be for car rides.
  • We haven't heard back from the doberman rescue yet.  BUUUTTT, the dog we applied for is still listed on the site.  I'm repeating to myself, "Calm your tits, Megan.  They will call.  Calmith your titith."  PS. It's not working.
  • ALL THE SNUGGLES!  Meri has been extra struggly and I don't mind giving her unlimited attention since there is currently one dog.  I even made a point to sit nap on the upstairs couches with her so she could hang out with me on the couch and snuggle.

DREI

From my phone:

Meri's new awesome collars arrived...
(Not pictured: the one she is wearing that Teh German picked of the 3.)
and so did Phil's new tag.

When Teh German decides to cut down the new flag pole to not be so long (which I agreed to) but then you realize he's probably not being very safe so you help him....  AND THEN he got out the electric hand saw.  We both walked away with all of our phalanges still attached.

SPROUTS!!!

The passion flower fine needed more things to grow on and I've given up on it growing up the pole since the vine on the other side of the sidewalk died.  Instead, I'm going to let it take over this corner.  It's gonna be HUUUUGGEEE!

Passion flower bloom about to open.

The not planted plants.  I'm thinking maybe this year they will find a home in the back yard?
Except for the aloe, which will probably stay in it's pot.

I bought Teh Running Bestie a "mother's day" present.
Mother's day was just an excuse to buy the top since I knew she had wanted this one when she was here in March.

I was informed by Coworkers Who Get Me that this was in the "playroom."
You better believe I'll be putting this bad boy (haha) together.

I ordered cork boards so I could put my pins back up at our new office.  The cubes don't have cork behind the fabric, so you can't stick pin into it.  Booooooo.

My new laptop charger had this stuck to it and it was kinda peeling off, so I removed it.
Then I found the hidden Mickey.  It was a sign.

Teh PT Wife sent me this Snap yesterday.
I stepped on it when we went on our Pack Walk.  It is definitely unused.
Maybe this was a neighbor telling us not to reproduce? HA!

VIER

From the internet:

-Teh German and I are pretty much unstoppable now that we haaavvvvveeeeeee The Gansta Translator!

-When I discovered the following image wasn't real.. I was crushed.

-Target has women's dresses buy 1 get 1 50% off.  Guess who isn't interested in wearing pants in June?  This girl!  So I went on a dress shopping spree.. To mean that I bought almost all the colors in this dress because it's my absolute fave.  Really the shout out goes to Teh WJL for picking it as our bridesmaids dresses.  I bought even more dresses on Thursday after I checked the dresses I already had and realized I had bought the wrong size.  The dresses in my closet are smalls.  The dresses I ordered are med and large.  I can't risk them being sold out online, so I ordered more and will end up doing a massive return next week.  #solidlifechoices

-I consider myself a compassionate person, but of all the things that South Carolina could  be doing, THIS is where we put our focus?  Some foundation founder actually said,  "Getting them outside and giving them the opportunity to do things in the outdoors aids in the healing process, we believe."  Uhh.. you're talking about terminally ill children.  I'm not sure you understand what "terminal" means.

This is the same state (FML this is my state now) that is trying to pass legislation to allow anyone open carry [a gun] without a permit.  I repeat (in all caps) WITHOUT A GUN PERMIT.  In case you live under a rock, this is the same state where a white youth shot up a church and killed 9 people in the name of white supremacy.  Roof was able to obtain a weapon despite having a pending felony charge because background checks aren't thorough and now we want to do away with them completely because it goes against the 2nd Amendment?  I cannot with this shit.  I'm all for owning guns and going through the process.  Keep your guns.. but go through the processes to prove you aren't shady as shit so the rest of us don't have to worry about you going crazy and shooting up another church... or whatever.

-Another BAB article I wrote went live.  You've probably already read about my save the date drama.. buttttt, I shared it again.

-Kathy talked about this a while ago and I agreed with the idea and so I've been sharing this lately about coordinating workouts with your menstrual cycle.  Oh yeah, and cut yourself some slack if it's fat week and you don't feel like working out.  It's a thing, not just you, and you're not alone.

-These cookie cutters could make me bake more cookies.... I think.

FÜNF

10 things that made me happy this week:
  1. Being able to medicate Teh German so his nose stopped running like a faucet.  #SudafedFTW
  2. The smell of Vaporub on Teh German at bedtime.
  3. Snuggles with Meri
  4. Meri not destroying the house when she's unsupervised.
  5. Roux's Humom - in general, but especially for how she is always willing to let Meri hang out and all the photos she sends me of Roux and Meri.
  6. Adulting all week and making dinner rather than going out.
  7. Company and how they are extremely flexible and awesome and enable me to do awesome things (to include teleworking for the month of June/the ability to take PTO on short notice).
  8. The New Music Friday Spotify playlist.. anddd the World of Warcraft soundtracks being on Spotify.  Soooo, really Spotify in general.
  9. Afternoon naps, evening pack walks, dinner, and still being able to watch a few episodes while doing puzzles.
  10. Secrets.

Happy Friday, Gentle Readers.

Confessions {5/10}

-I was searching for a headphones extension cord since I have a bad habit of rolling away from my desk a little too far and one of my earbuds will violently pull from my ear.  Riddle me this, Batman.. Who is using a 25ft headphone extension cord?  Why not just get cordless headphones?  I was thinking like a 2-4 foot extension, but apparently a 25 foot cable is only $1 more. #WTF

-I seriously wore a dress without bothering to shave my legs last week.  I wanted to give a fuck, but I just didn't.  Apparently that book about Not Giving a F*ck is working.  #notsorry #pricklyinalltheways

-Pretty sure a dress I wore last week shrank.. except it doesn't make sense when since I know I didn't dry it and laid it flat to dry like the instructions said.  I spent the entire day tugging at my hem and trying to remember not to bend over for any reason.  I even made Teh German look at my butt and make sure that he couldn't see anything before we left for work that morning.  #CatholicModesty  #SuperSelfConscious

-I am the only crazy privacy person that regularly views my Facebook profile and changes everything that is public to friends only?  I mean, I even change previous cover photos to friends only.  Everything is on lock down.  Pretty sure you also can't message me unless you are at least a friend of a friend (if that setting is still a thing), no randos allowed.

-Every year when I see NCSU graduation pictures, I get extremely jealous of their red cap and gowns.  That boring ass black that we wore was such a disappointment.  Siiiiiiiigh.  #RedMightBeMyFavoriteColor #DontTellTheOthers

-I set a picture of Phil and Olive as the GEGR FB header and now it keeps showing up on my feed when FB wants the group to pay to advertise and I love and hate it at the same time.

-I understand respecting history but I learned about Confederate Memorial Day yesterday and my mind was blown.  Apparently, in SC, it's a recognized "holiday" and some government offices will actually be closed.  Uhhhhhhh... what?  Why do people who support the Confederacy (ugh, still) feel like other (federally recognized) days of remembrance are not enough for them?  I just don't get it.  Also, #Ihateeveryone

-When it takes you longer to send me the email delegating a task, you should probably just do it yourself.  Especially since the task isn't related to anything I do.  #SmarterNotHarder

-My hip has been hurting a LOT recently and I'm struggling with the balance between medicating and not medicating.  Idk why but I'm paranoid about becoming addicted.  It's very difficult to function and do my job when I'm medicated, so I try to avoid taking my pills when possible.  But since we moved to the new office, I've been sitting, which is exacerbating the situation.  Is it June 1st yet?

-Sometimes I feel like I'm a bitch at work but I tell myself that it's not my fault.  I try my best to use context clues to assist my coworkers with what they need when they ask me a question.  But if someone says to me, "Do we have the build plan?" "Where is the document for Project?"  I get irritated.  The reality is, my job isn't limited to a single project.  Nor does a single project have a single document.  Rather than me having ask 20  questions to figure out what the fuck they are talking about, I have started saying, "There are multiple documents per project and I work on most of our projects.  You need to be more specific or I cannot help you."  I've spent 2.5 years trying to be nice to people and read their minds.  #ImOverIt #HelpMeHelpYou

-I copied someone and saved a whole bunch of Thomas Kinkade/Disney photos to use as my desktop background at work.  I have zero regrets.

-I may or may not have spent almost $300 on dresses so I don't have to wear pants after my surgery.  I do have plans to return some that don't fit, so that is dollars saved.  Additionally, I used gift certificates, which was $70 off and my 5% Red Card discount and free shipping?  Final price: $185, excluding what I eventually return.  These dresses will also double as work clothes, so I'm proud of my investment.

-Since I had to work late on Tuesday, I decided to peruse the Art Festival thing that was taking place on the street outside my office when I left.  It was a win because not only did I see Teh SC Greyhound Neighbor and bought Teh Running Bestie's mother's day present (which was really just an excuse to buy her a shirt she had wanted when she was here in March), Tami-Draws was also there and I dropped some dollas at her booth on prints I've been eyeing for a hot minute.  I totally fangirl-ed Tami and she was probably like, "Woah, she's a crazy one."  But really, I've been a huge fan since I first arrived to Charleston. #shoplocal

-I am all for vaccinating children, buttttt I rarely get all the suggested vaccines for Meri.  I always make sure she has her rabies, even though the likelihood of Meri getting the disease is remote, it's legally required, so fine.  I turn down the lyme, bordatella, and lepto vaccines.

-I started thinking about photo printing this week since I finished my Asheville flower edits.  This means those frames that have been sitting in my office since.. uhhh.. late 2016.. now finally have a chance of being filled.  Additionally, I have 2 Disney frames I need to print photos for (Disneyland trip and then Disney World in Dec).  ANNNNDDD I want to have some of our engagement photos printed.  AAAANNNNDDD (again), I have 4 windows that will be for holding photos.  2 of those are mine, 2 are Teh Running Besties, but all 4 will be used as decorations for the wedding.  #ALLTHEPICTURES

-Meri has been doing ok.  She was a little bit sad, but I've been leaving her out of her crate and Roux's Humom has been checking on her/dog sitting her this week and she's been doing well.  We haven't heard anything from the doberman rescue, but I have high hopes that we'll hear something within the next week or so.  My goal would be to make a pit stop in NC to meet the dog on our way back from MD.  I'm sure this is a situation of best laid plans that will go awry.

-I registered for my Fall 2017 classes.  Differential math something, German 1, a computer science class, and chemistry.  #somuchfun

-In my head, I'm already planning out things I need to take care of before my surgery.  This may or may not include cleaning the floors downstairs because they are gross.  It definitely includes finishing up the laundry the night before my surgery.  #TypeAPlanner

-I don't know if I've mentioned it lately, but some of our neighbors are really, reaaaaalllllyyy awesome.  In addition to all the love we got after Phil passed (to include some cards and surprises), Roux's Humom organized meals for us after my surgery so Teh German doesn't have to cook.  I seriously don't know how we got so lucky to have such good neighbors who are also our friends.  I mean, you can have good neighbors who aren't your friends, but this is more than that and I'm so grateful!  I did tell Roux's Humom that she ruined my test!  I was going to see if Teh German could keep us alive while I am out of commission.  She didn't relent on her plan to keep us fed.  She's awesome.  Teh German has already mentioned something about hosting a gathering as a thank you for everyone once I'm handicap-able.

-Teh German has had a runny nose and a cough and general ickyness for the past few days.  I swear if he gets me sick before we go to MD, I will NOT be a happy camper.  He already did this to me before Disney.  It's unacceptable to get me sick twice in under 6 months.  #RUDE

SYUB: April 2017

Life According to Steph
2 super long audiobooks this month and I was over 50% of the way through one of my library books when it expired.. oops.  I put myself on the hold list (#2 on 1 copy), so I'm hoping to finish that one next month.

My goal this month is to actually read the hard copy books I have waiting on me.  Do you think people would notice if I started carrying a book with me to the bathroom at work?  Wait.. let me rephrase that.  Do I care if people notice me carrying a book to the bathroom at work?  Hrm.. I'll research this and get back to you.  Carrying my phone is way less obvious which is why I gravitate towards ebooks so that way I always have something to read when I'm needing quiet entertainment.

Anyways, on to the books!

Rating scale*:

1/5 - Hated it, didn't finish.
2/5 - Tolerated it on principle to finish, didn't like it.
3/5 - Eh, didn't love it, didn't hate it. Had some good parts/kept me interested/finished it on principle.
3.5/5 - I liked parts of it.
4/5 - I liked the whole thing.
4.5/5 - I liked it a lot, but not sure I'd read it again.
5/5 - I LURVED it and I'd read it again.

Skimmers, stick with the bold text (TL;DR** parts).
PS. Possible spoilers included in reviews.

Black Cross by Greg Iles   4/5 (audiobook)
WW2 book about an American and a German Jewish man who are recruited for a special operation to sneak into a concentration camp and steal Soman (sp?) (a lethal nerve gas) and then disable/destroy the camp.  Along the way both men realize they have been deceived by the special operations commander.

Some parts of the book felt tedious, yet I just wanted to know what would happen.  That said, the indecision in crucial moments made me want to shake all the characters.  There was more than once that I started yelling, "STFU already and just make a fucking decision!  It's not that difficult, you moral purist!"

The love story line felt unnecessary, but added to the plot complications.  I felt like the only reason for the present day characters was to be able to give an epilogue, which was moderately annoying.  I think I would have been ok with just the past story line.

TL;DR: Obviously, I was into the book if I was yelling at it.  WW2 themed and I had to keep reminding myself that it was fiction.  It read as if it was non-fiction.

The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon  5/5 (library ebook)
A black girl and an asian boy meet by chance in NYC.  He's kinda creepy in an endearing (Megan-like) way.  She's standoffish because she doesn't want him to fall for her since she's being deported, but she won't tell him and it's awkward.

The entire story takes place over a day, which made it felt like the book progressed really fast.  I was able to read this one very quickly.  The epilogue gave the book a sweet ending, but it would have been ok without it.

TL;DR:  Boy meets girl and they fall in love in a day.  Cute YA novel without too much teenage angst.

Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult   5/5 (audiobook)
In true Picoult style, this book pulled at my heart.  SGT (not to be confused with sargent) made me realize that skin color does still very much matter, almost 50 years after the civil rights movement.  SGT made me almost embarrassed to be a white person, maybe embarrassed is the wrong word, but rather uncomfortable?  It made me realize that people of color struggle in ways I'll never completely understand or know because it's not applicable to me.

I hate, hate, hateeeeeddd Turk Bower, but without him, there would have been no story.  It blows my mind that people actually believe in white supremacy and Turk's chapters often left me feeling sick to my stomach and hating people even more than normal.

I very much identified with Kennedy as a person and her closing argument felt like I was a part of the jury.  She pointed out truths that I know about myself, which is uncomfortable.

Oh yeah, the story.  Ruth, a black nurse, is on trial for murdering Davis Bower (the white supremacist's baby). I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of black readers to see if they agree with Picoult's representation.

TL;DR: This book will show you that comfortable racism is totally a thing.  If you're white it may open your eyes to the realities of being a person of (any) color.

The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck: How to Stop Spending Time You Don't Have with People You Don't Like Doing Things You Don't Want to Do by Sarah Knight   2.5/5 (library ebook)
Honestly, I wanted to take something from this book, but I quickly realized that I already do most of the things that Knight discussed.  Maybe this book was validation for the fact that I've long since stopped giving fucks about what people think (for the most part).

There was a point about 50 pages in that I was feeling over "fucked".  As in, I was tired of reading the word fuck.  It's like when you say a word over and over and over and over and it starts to sound weird and you question how to spell it, even though you know it's correct.  I was just fucking over it.

I did appreciate the entertaining writing style that Knight used, even if there was no way I'd ever sit on the floor and make a list of all the items in my mental barn.

Another title for the book could have been "Just Say No."  Really though, stop feeling guilty for not doing things out of obligation (just hurt the feelings of those who are trying to make you feel obligated a few times and eventually they will back off/stop because they realize you're not going to stand for their shit) and you do you.  It's that simple.

It's uncomfortable at first (she didn't lie about that), but I don't stress nearly as much anymore after embracing the power of no.  It doesn't make me a bitch or even a Nasty Woman or even empowered, it is just setting my boundaries which some people (men and women) struggle to do.  It's the reason I don't accept meetings after 3pm Mon-Thurs or after lunch on Friday.  I don't want to.  I know I'm not going to be engaged, which makes my attendance pointless.  It also impedes my personal time and my time is valuable.  Just say no.. or stop giving fucks and say no anyways.

TL;DR: Be honest, but don't be an asshole, and stop trying to make people feel good because you feel obligated/guilted.  There, I just saved you 206 pages.
