Five on Friday #135

EINS - Random things

-Just as I anticipated, one of my projects assigned a document to me on Tuesday afternoon for review.  I'm not annoyed at having to do my job.  I'm annoyed that they waited for a week before assigning it to me, which is a week that I could have been doing it and not worrying about the million hours of math tasks I have to accomplish between now and April.

-Not having to spend a fortune on textbooks brings me great joy.  There is no book for my Photoshop class.  The book for my computer science class is online and had a discount since we used it last semester ($30).  The book for my math class isn't required, only the online access code for doing homework ($88).. But the same book is used for Calc 2, so it might be worth it to purchase it.  I haven't decided.  The book for my German class is the same book we used in German 101 ($185 if you divide the total by 2 semesters).  I ordered previous version of my Biology book ($13) and paid for the online access code ($70).  What this really means is that I get to carry my super awesome outer space backpack this semester since everything will fit!

-I helped the new guy out on Monday morning on his first day with various issues and on Thursday, there was a Starbucks gift card sitting on my desk with a thank you note written on it.  The acknowledgement was nice and I have a feeling this guy will be a good PM and I think I'd be ok with being on his team.

-The Pixel 2 is a pretty simple transition from a Samsung Galaxy (S6).  The biggest issue I'm having is that the virtual keys are under the keyboard and I'm not used to it yet so I keep hitting them, which is annoying.  I think overtime it will get better though.  Otherwise, I'm pleased with my life choice.  The only hitch is that the charging port is USB type-C, so that means all new charging cables for my entire life.

-My Calculus teacher is almost obnoxiously energetic.  I guess he could be the opposite, which is worse, so I don't mind.

-I think this will be a pretty good semester.
MWF: Photoshop, Computer Science 2, Calculus 1, German 2.
T/TH: Biology, Calculus 1
W: afternoon Bio lab

-I have to thoroughly clean one of the chairs I bought this week and I really don't have time this weekend.  Class, work, dinner today.  Half marathon, socializing on Saturday.  Brunch, homework on Sunday.  I'm out of class on Monday and off work, but I need to accomplish some work things and will probably still be working on homework.  Soooo yeah.  Did I mention I have company this weekend too?  #ItsHardToBeMe #TestingTheLimitsOfMyAnxietyPills

-Last night, there were FOUR puzzle masters working on The Devil Puzzle.  That bitch is gettin' done and off my table by Monday at bedtime.  Even if that means bedtime is at 4am.

-It's Restaurant Week in Charleston, which means that places that I am too poor to eat at offer specials for the poor people and we can afford to eat there if we've been saving up for the 2x a year occurrence.  Many places offer a specific number of courses (usually 2/3) for a set dollar amount, i.e. 3 courses for $45 at a fancy steak house where steaks are normally $40+ and sides are $10-15 for family portions.  Anyways, I got reservations for tonight.  #likeaboss

-This week, I had to send out a poll for a friend if telling your Husband to stop acting like a child was acceptable after he'd been having mini tantrums all afternoon and you'd finally gotten fed up when he banged his fist on your (already broken) electronic device you were letting him borrow.  Turns out, it's acceptable.  Turns out, everyone else remembered why Teh German was acting out before I did.  We had company coming the next day and he always gets "out of sorts"... /rolleyes

-The new cleaning lady brought me joy.  She's super nice and they did a better job than the first cleaner.  There were some things that were missed and I didn't love, but overall, better.  Our closet floor didn't get vacuumed and the kitchen floor was mopped but didn't look like it.  I also disliked that they used a vacuum on the downstairs floors, but it didn't have a hard floors setting, so the brush was on and throwing shit everywhere, which is why vacuums have that hard floor setting...  I'm going to mention these things before she comes back next time.  Also, she started the washing machine with the dirty linens from our bed.  All I had to do was put them in the dryer and fold them.  I accomplished the put the in the dryer part.  Gold star for me!

-We got a new dental insurance company which sucks because they don't cover the dentist I've been going to for the last few years, so now I have to find a new dentist.  In good news, Teh German now has dental insurance (#BestWifeEver) so I'll be making a "couples" appointment for us.  JK.  I'll just be making 2 appointments.

-Going to visit Chrio before any half marathon is my new favorite thing.  Especially when I'm really out of whack.  I'd been trying to pop via foam roller and roller balls for days and it wasn't cutting it.  Chiro set me back in place and I'll be able to run without pain tomorrow!  Woot!

-Oh yeah, I'm running the Charleston Half Marathon tomorrow morning.. entirely for the Rainbow Row medal.  Teh Running Bestie picked up my race packet this afternoon and she was sneaky sneaky and signed me up (i.e. paid) for the 2019 half since she deferred her marathon this year due to her surgery.

DREI - Things from my phone

Photoshop is making my computer give me the blue screen of death...
Troubleshooting in progress, but ugh I have other things to do.

I've been decorating via FB Marketplace.
I bought 2 oversized chairs this week.
It was fortutious that Teh Running Bestie and Teh Soccer Mom were in town to help me yesterday afternoon.

We exchanged Christmas presents with Teh Running Bestie.
She gave me the bride and groom Mickey ears ornaments!
Teh German received a more traditionally German ornament.
SQUEEE!

Our first project in our Photoshop is a clown themed magazine cover.
While I wanted to work on it, my computer crashed 3 times ensuring that all work was lost.
Why the shit are people so enamored by creepy clowns?
No me gusta.

School and work make for a quiet week.

VIER - Things from the Internet

Mario Batelli included a recipe with his sexual harassment apology letter.  Someone made them and gave us her thoughts as she did.  SOLID.

FÜNF - Things that made me happy this week

  1. School finally starting back - getting into a routine helps me thrive.  Even if it's a stressful routine.
  2. Being able to go cheap on all my books.
  3. Managing to get a reservation at a pretty fancy restaurant on a Friday night during Charleston Restaurant Week for 6 people.  #likeaboss
  4. Not having forgotten ALL of my computer science lessons.
  5. My German teacher prompting me about my new last name on the first day of class since it was my maiden name on her attendance roster.
  6. Friends who travel a mabillionty hours to visit me... on the regular.
  7. Extra 4-leggers in the house!
  8. "Nesting"... Megan style.  Decorating House finally.
  9. Math with numbers.
  10. Homework.  As sick as that is, knowing that I always have something to do brings me a mild comfort..  Yes, I'm weird.  We've accepted this about me.

Happy Friday, Gentle Readers.

SUYB: December Books

Life According to Steph
Not being in school really frees up my reading time.  Well, that and finishing up a 55 hour audiobook.  I have, disappointingly, decided NOT to do Erin's Challenge this session because I don't want to add anymore stress to myself for the semester.  I will probably participate in the summer challenge because I will have a month and a half before school starts.  We shall see.

While this month looks impressive, it's really not.  2 of these books were at least halfway complete when I posted my last book post...

Rating scale*:

1/5 - Hated it, didn't finish.
2/5 - Tolerated it on principle to finish, didn't like it.
3/5 - Eh, didn't love it, didn't hate it. Had some good parts/kept me interested/finished it on principle.
3.5/5 - I liked parts of it.
4/5 - I liked the whole thing.
4.5/5 - I liked it a lot, but not sure I'd read it again.
5/5 - I LURVED it and I'd read it again.

*Subject to change based on my mood, the phase of the moon, or other unpredictable variables.

Skimmers, stick with the bold text (TL;DR* parts).
PS. Possible spoilers included in reviews.

The Fiery Cross (Outlander, #5) by Diana Gabaldon   2.75/5 (Audible audiobook)

I swear, it's just the narrator that keeps me "reading" these.  This book was torturetastic.  First off, it took EIGHT HOURS to get through one day.  I was over it. Then there was so much about Brianna's boobs and breastfeeding and it was like she had a kid.  The whole drama with the paternity of the baby annoyed me.  Which leads me right into the hour long biology lesson from Gabaldon about recessive and dominant genes and who the fuck cares?!?!?!?!  Another 6 hour chug through another day.  Roger must be Gabaldon's favorite character to torture because nothing bad ever really seems to happen to other characters to scar them for life.. well at least in comparison to Roger.  I'm annoyed/glad that Ian is back, despite the already overabundant amount of characters I'm trying to keep up with in my mind.

TL;DR: There are better ways I could have spent 55 hours of my life, but this is what I chose.  #FML

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood   4/5 (ebook, own)

Teh Running Bestie bought this book for me for the Kindle because she knew I wanted to read it and I told her the library had a million year long wait list.  This book kept my interest because I wanted to figure out when this story was taking place and how society ended up this way.  In my post-reading-research, I learned that this book was written in the 80s.  Also, I may have skipped the epilogue of the book because I thought it wasn't actually part of the book, but like an author's speech about the book or something.  I skimmed it and was like, Meh, fuck this.  In my research, I learned that was actually a part of the book and maybe I should reread it.  I'm still deciding.

PS.  I read this because I want to eventually watch the series.

TL;DR: Written in the 80's, men have all the power and women are categorized in this dystopian society.

Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori, #1) by Lian Hearn   4.5/5 (hard copy, own, reread)

While I know what is going to happen, I've forgotten WHEN things are going to happen, so it's nice "defragmenting" my brain.  I still love this story as much as I did the first time.  I actually found the first book of this series in the clearance section at Barnes & Nobles years and years ago when I was still in high school.  When I realized it was a series, it was game on.  I own all of these books and they are special enough to have been retained through many book purges.

This book is about a teenage boy who has ties to 2 different families in "feudal Japan" ("" because these books involve powers so it's kind of fantasy themed).  He meets Kaede and they are instantly in love.  Kaede got on my nerves with her girlishness through this entire book, but the way the book is set up, it's to be expected.

TL;DR: Feudal Japan meets fantasy meets YA... and the series is complete.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng   4/5 (Audible audiobook)

No one writes books about communication failures like Celeste Ng.  That summary could also include dysfunctional families.  In this book, what appears perfect is far from it.  How horrible Mrs. Richardson was to Izzy made me angry throughout the entire book, even after getting an explanation.

I appreciated that there was a single tipping event that moved the story along (finally) and how it tied everything together.  I guessed the mystery about Mia well before it was discussed, but that is ok.  I was sad for Perl and hated the way Lexy used her, which I knew would only cause problems.

TL;DR: Family dysfunction and communication failures are Ng's forte.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman   3.5/5 (Audible audiobook)

I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did.  The part that kept me interested was finding out the details about the fire.  I won't lie, the ending kinda threw me for a loop and I did not anticipate that ending with the mom.  As Steph would say, passed the time just fine... considering I spent 6 hours listening to this while puzzling last weekend...

TL;DR: Eleanor is obviously NOT completely fine.

In Progress:

Grass for His Pillow (Tales of the Otori #2) by Lian Hearn   */5 (hard copy, own, reread)
The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett by Chelsea Sedoti  */5 (library audiobook)

On Deck:

  • More Outlander
    • I will finish this series, even if it takes me the rest of my life.
  • More Tales of the Otori
  • The Time Quintet series (aka The Wrinkle in Time series)
    • I bought the boxed set from Amazon for $10 and I'm pumped to read those before I eventually watch the movie.
  • Something from my TBR list (whatever I can find from the library/Audible)

YAY for books!
*TL;DR = too long, don't read

Weekend Review {1/8}

FRIDAY

I got up and worked on Friday.  Teh German stayed in bed and I finally had to yell at him to get him to come downstairs because "MY COFFEE WON'T MAKE ITSELF!"  #notsorry  Back story: I tried to make coffee recently and it was horrible and I used too much coffee and not enough water and I'm pretty sure that you could have stood up a knife in it because it was so strong...  After that, I told Teh German that he was officially the coffee maker and I admitted defeat.

While I worked, Teh German worked on green card paperwork and I broke down and filled out one of the forms for him, since it was all my information and it was easier than transcribing to him.  He was irritated at how quickly I was able to fill out the form and I had to remind him of all the security clearance paperwork I've done over the years.  He also didn't like when I used my VX-1 job against him and gave him advice on how to best fill out the forms.

In the evening, we went out to dinner with Roux's Humom and Mr. Golfer and Teh PT Family.  We were all going stir crazy, so I made a few calls to see who was open and we agreed on a local place that I hadn't been to before.

When we got home at 7:30, Teh German took to the couch and watched the Stingrays game while I puzzled and listened to my audiobook.

I ended up finally going to bed around 0130.  Oops.

SATURDAY

Saturday morning we got a slow start and Teh German and I made a plan to go to Sam's and take care of some shopping.  We decided to peruse the aisles and we accidentally fell in love with a liquor cabinet that we silently agreed we needed.  As Teh German got the cabinet loaded into the truck, I finished up the rest of the shopping.  We had planned to go to Lidl, but Teh German didn't want to leave the cabinet in the back of the truck, so we headed home.

Roux's Humom was watching Frozen for the first time while we were in Sam's and she was live texting it to me.
I found this big Elsa head pillow a fitting selfie to send her.

We went through the disastrous process of unloading the cabinet and getting it set up (it was already assembled, but we had to balance the feet and put it where we wanted).  If you've ever dealt with another human being you will understand me when I say, I take an exuberant amount of pleasure when I make a suggestion for a way to do something, the suggestion is aggressively shunned, and then something happens and it's completely not your fault AND it wouldn't have happened at all if things had been done the way you suggested...  Yeah, well.. that happened when Teh German chipped the bottom of the cabinet because he'd leaned it over instead of flipping it over like I suggested.  I didn't say a single word AND I didn't even smile.  But you can bet Inner Megan was being her snarkiest.  Fortunately, he was able to glue the chipped piece back on and you can't really tell AND it's on the not visible side.

We had plans with the Street Cool Kids at 6 for a birthday gathering and we trekked through the cold and arrived at 6:25.  We ended up leaving around 0255.  Oops.  #PartyAnimals

SUNDAY

Since it was a late night, I didn't sleep in because why would I do something like that?  I woke up at 0930 and messaged Teh PT Wife and propositioned her for brunch and shopping.  She took me up on it and we headed to Charleston Cafe and Deli for brunch and then we headed to At Home for several hours.  We also made a stop at Lidl to pick up some items that I hadn't gotten at Sam's because too much is a thing.  Once we got home and unloaded the car, we walked the beasts with Roux's Humom.  After that, Teh PT Wife and I agreed that we should order Chinese for dinner and watch Guardians of the Galaxy 2.. and so it was.

My dog is a groundhog, or a mole, or any other vermin that burrows into the ground.

Teh German is Max's favorite human I think.
Look at that smile in the top picture.

Evolution of the Devil's Puzzle:

Slow and steady wins the race.

We still have snow on the ground and it makes me smile every time I see it.  Even though I was behind several morons this morning who were unable to drive in icy conditions.

Teh Running Bestie and Teh Soccer Mom will be here in a few days!  YAY!

I think my phone shipped.  I think.  I'll find out if it arrives tomorrow.

I got a million and one (i.e. 2) returns to send back to Amazon and Teh German needs to go to the post office and I have a return for Walmart and JCPenny.  UUUUGGGHHHH.

I am on the hunt for chairs for the bedrooms.  Apparently, 2018 is my year to NEST.  I'm making our house a home and I'm decorating and shit.  Nesting isn't just for pregnant women, so before that thought bubble surfaces, let me go ahead and pop it.  NO.  I'm thinking that 2018 is the year for painting and such too!  Teh German is already quivering in his boots.  #notsorry

School starts on Wednesday.  My Photoshop syllabus actually states, "Clowning around" during week 3.  Yes please and thank you very much.  I just finished signing up for the Bio class that I was hoping would be full so I couldn't take it.. buttt now I can and I will.  Ugh.  Getting shit done.  I don't think my boss is going to be too thrilled about me missing my morning meeting every day... #oops.

Five on Friday #134

EINS - IT SNOWED

We got 6-7 inches of snow on Wednesday.  It just kept snowing allllll day long and it was perfect and wonderful and I'm so glad I can telework and not have to stress about getting to work in horrible road conditions in a place that doesn't maintain the infrastructure to deal with things like this since it so rarely occurs.

Let's dial it back a minute.
It SNOWED in Charleston, South Carolina.
The last time it snowed like this was after Hurricane Hugo in 1987.
I'm already devastated to know that this probably won't happen again in the near future. #ItsHardToBeMe

Nonetheless, Pax and Meri have been enjoying the snow.  I've been enjoying their naps. We didn't lose power and we maintained hot water with some careful planning of running appliances during the night and keeping a faucet going on low throughout the night.  I also won the #BestWifeEver award when Teh German suggested that he take the truck out to do donuts and I said, "Ok, lets do it."  I think he thought I was going to try to talk him out of it.  Instead, I was asking when we were leaving!

Roux's Humom took some AWESOME pics of Pax and Meri playing in the snow at Teh PT House on Thursday!  Mostly, we've just kept things quiet around Teh Ville.  Other than venturing out to do donuts (when there was only about 4" of snow and no ice), we haven't left the house since the snow turned to ice on the first night and has continued to be ice since the temps haven't gone above 36°F in days.  Local governments are urging people to stay home since the roads are covered with ice, but stupid people are still stupid and they are going out to get to work.

It is really sad that nonessential businesses can't shut down for the safety of their employees.  I understand a lack of profit, but I feel like endangering your employees for the sake of making money (when really, how many customers do you really think you're gonna have at a clothing store when the roads are covered in ice?) isn't necessary.  I also feel like considering the safety of your employees shows that you value them and when they return to work, morale should be, maybe, slightly improved.  Maybe that's just wishful thinking?  Either way, I know that Teh German did a happy dance when he found out that he didn't have to go into work this morning.

I assume that by Monday things will be back to normal and I'm already sad about it.

Someone from our development posted on the neighborhood facebook page about how she was going stir crazy and asked if she should shovel the snow/ice from her driveway or if she could just drive over it to get out....  THIS is the reason that I'd rather deal with being stuck in the house with Teh German for wayyy too many hours than go out.  Teh German > Dumbasses.  Errday.

Pax and Meri playing in the snow:

ZWEI - Random Things

-I like to ensure a relative amount of order on my Goodreads lists.  So I try to accurately pick which edition of anything I've read (audible/kindle/hard copy)... Well this burned me when I was trying to get my reading stats for the year since an Audible version doesn't have pages like a regular book.  Bleh.  So I have a feeling next year I'll be picking the hard copy version and then noting what format it was in so that way I have an accurate page count.  #priorities #OCDproblems #BooksForLife

-My advisor didn't answer my question about my science classes before winter furlough started and I'm really thinking that I'll be taking Calc 1 and a mf-ing science class this semester and I'm certain I'm 5 more minutes of thinking about before I break out in hives.  I was planning for an easy semester and that is looking more like a maybe not so much.  What it really means is that I need to NOT take that Photoshop class that I am looking forward to and put in a science class, but I'm really not interested in that.  That means I should add the science class to my schedule which puts me at 5 classes AND a lab that I didn't want to take this semester and I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to get fired for really testing the limits of this whole full time school and full time work thing.  #MeganProblems
Latergram: My advisor said my email went to his spam folder and he confirmed that I do need 4 total science classes so it looks like Chem 2 is in my future and I hate everything once again.  I will also be taking Bio 2, which is annoying.

-I created a new Googly account with my new last name and ensuring that everything is duplicated/replicated to the new account is a major PITA, mostly because Google doesn't have a way to combine accounts.  It's been a tedious process.  First, I set up all my forwarding rules and got my email straightened out.  Then I realized that I also needed to copy over all my calendar stuff.  Once I got that straightened out, I thought I was good.  Then I signed into Blogger and realized that unless I want to sign out/in every time I blog, I should correct that issue.  Adding another admin wasn't a big deal, but getting the Blogger profile set up was a pita, so if I'm a no-reply commenter, please let me know.  I think I'm finally good to go on the Google front, but I'm sure something else will eventually come up (my Google Drive/Google Sheets)...

-Teh German has lofty goals of working on his Green Card paperwork today.  I'm hoping he doesn't give up out of frustration and I don't do my Type-A thing where I take it over, even though I've told him I'm not doing it.  He's already killed an entire tree with his printing.

Update: I've taken to calling him Big Bad Wolf because he keeps heavily sighing and I'm afraid he's going to blow our house down.  If he ever has to fill out a security questionnaire for the government, I'm going on vacation... ALONE.

-Teh Running Bestie and Teh Soccer Mom will be here next week!!!!  I made sure to stock up at the grocery store...

-I'm running a half marathon on the 13th and I've not run at all since the Kiawah half marathon.  I'm not impressed with myself, don't worry.  But I actually have legit excuses.  First it was final exams/recovery week.  Then I was sick with The Death.  Then it was negative mabillionty degrees outside and I was just getting over The Death so I didn't want to risk my health.  Then it SNOWED.  So ya know.  I'll be winging it and doing a lot of stretching...  #LikeIDo

-Class starts on Jan 10th.  I'm already not ready.

-After 2 weeks of being on strike when it came to cooking dinner, I'm back in the game!  I cleared the bases this week with my crockpot.  I made some epic taco soup (or tortilla soup, depending on what you call it) and then I spent yesterday being attentive to some homemade spaghetti sauce so we could have sketti for dinner.  #LIKEAMOTHERFUCKINGBOSS #NoRegrets

-Even I can admit defeat.  It was 12°F this morning and I took this screenshot on snow day.  It's officially too fucking cold.  BUT, at least since it was this cold it actually snowed.  So I'm not really complaining.  I'm just pointing out that it's really fucking cold outside and you'll find me in my house with #messyhairdontcare and in my bathrobe.  #nofucksgiven

-I bought fabric softener at Lidl last week because the static in our house has been really bad.  I also put out my humidifier stone/ball that Teh Sister got me many moons ago.  I can tell a difference.  Before all that though, I was certain I was going to need to buy stock in Static Guard for the dogs' beds and coats.  I've also been running the dryer on anti-static mode as an extra boost.  IT'S SO DRRRYYYY.

-I would like to leave my house because I'm having a little bit of the stir crazy feeling, butttttt there's just too many dumbasses driving on icy roads for me.

DREI - Money Spent

Snow days mean sitting inside and buying shit on Amazon.
  • Pixel 2.  After Dorothy decided she didn't want to show me her goods (aka the screen wasn't working, even though the notification light was still working and I could hear notifications coming through), I went to Verizon and started scoping out my next move.  I didn't really want to buy a new phone, but Teh German pointed out (after Dorothy got her shit together and started working properly again) that I should trade in my phone while it still worked.  Ugh.  So now I have extra bills (again) and Teh German was right.  Apparently, it's a pre-order and won't be here until the 19th or something.  That's like, a super long time in realm of technological upgrades.
  • My calculus access code.  No, not the textbook the access code.  It was $100.  To access something on the internet.  This is why school is such a ripoff.
  • Amazon Prime membership.  I share my Prime account with, like, a million people, so it's worth it.  You are welcome, friends.
  • New Year's Day shopping with Teh PT Wife.  Belk's, Dillards, JCPenny, a pretzel from Auntie Anne's...
  • More Hue lights.  /roll eyes  Teh German wanted white lights in the loft and we decided to put a strip on the top of the pallet wall, but it needs an extension.  We are ridiculous.
  • Groceries.
  • Teh German's birthday present (beer of the month club)
  • Dog cheese sticks.  Tired dogs are good dogs.
  • New Otterbox case for the new phone, which will probably be called Pixey.  I'm so clever.

VIER - Things from the Internet

This list of tweets about marriage definitely made Teh German and I giggle.  #relationshipgoals

Sometimes, you just don't wanna.  There is no motivation to do anything because you're running on empty.  Yet, sometimes the best thing you can do is to power through all those things you don't want to do... That applies to friendships too.  Thanks, Allison!
