Corona-Cation Week 1... Part 1: Denver

It's been like.. a hot minute since I've stopped by here because this Corona chaos life is overly chaotic right now and I no longer have anything that resembles a routine. I do not thrive when there is no routine. I mean, I don't get upset by it, but I'm not as productive until I can figure out a new routine. What that really meant is that blogging went to the way-side.

So here's a probably not very short recap since when we left off... 10 days ago.. which feels like SO MUCH LONGER since so many things have happened in those 10 days.

Friday

I was in Denver when I last posted for my cancelled conference/waiting on Teh German to arrive.  It SNOWED and I couldn't stop smiling about it.

I've still not decided how pissed off I am that some "clever" barista didn't actually give me a venti beverage by putting all that stupid whipped cream on the bottom of my cup.  #RUDE

After my outing, I headed back to accomplish work things and get some dog snuggles.

Dinner was from, no shit, the Fat Shack, and I'm not sorry to admit that I ate all the fried oreos in that bag like the fatty I am.  I did NOT eat everything in the plate though, but I DID share it with the dogs, soooo it was a win for all.

My dinner cheerleaders.

After eating, Booth and I snuggled while we watched Anthony Jeselnik stand up on Netflix.

I fell asleep while watching TV and soon after, I headed to bed.

Saturday

Originally, Teh German and I were scheduled to run a 7k on Sunday, butttttttt it got cancelled on Thursday or Friday.. so instead, I found a local running group and did my 7k on my own so I can say I actually earned that medal.

I treated myself to post-run brunch.  The local ran I went to normally serves pancakes after the Saturday run, but due to Coronavirus (CV), they were not allowed, so I had to figure something out.  Boo.

I wasn't disappointed to find the Denver Biscuit Co. or something like that.

"Sweet" tea + a biscuit with fried chicken, apple butter, egg, and honey.

After feeding myself, I headed back to my host's house to shower and do laundry before heading to the airport to pick up Teh German.

Our first stop was actually burgers at Highland Bar or something to that effect, it was within walking distance of Prost, which was more important since Prost parking is a situation.

After eating, we walked over to Prost, which we've talked about since December 2018.

My new furend from Prost.

After beers, I wanted dessert.. so we walked the opposite direction of the car to check out Little Man Ice Cream (confirmed name, as it's in the photo for reference, lol) and I was not disappointed.  I ended up with a waffle cone with marshmallow ice cream that had Lucky Charms marshmallows in it.  Samples were not allowed because CV, so it was a blind choice that made me proud.

But then we had to walk back in the Denver chill (which is rather extreme once the sun goes down, mkay?) to the car and I had regrets.... and frozen fingers..

We made it back to the car and then headed to our hotel, which was unfortunately placed in a warehouse district in maybe not the best section of town.  Oops.  I didn't realize any of this when I booked it, and it wasn't even the cheapest option.  Teh German was not really pleased, but he also doesn't make our travel arrangements to sass my decisions... until then, he will deal with the travel arrangements that I make.

Once we got into the room, Teh German went to bed.  For various reasons, he hadn't slept much the 2 nights prior to coming to Denver.  I'm not actually sure how he fell asleep since it was the temperature of the sun in our room.  I ended up calling the front desk twice and finally just hauling my ass down there in my no-bra, pajama-ed outfit to complain.  I ended up with 2 box fans and opening the window, which I didn't even know was a possibility in hotels in 2020.. Butttt here we are.  Thankfully, it was a brisk 30°F outside and with the fans pulling the air in, it was rather pleasant except for the interstate and highway noise outside the hotel.  Siiiiiigh.

Sunday

While Teh German slept our vacation away, I did my research for places to eat and things to do for the day/trip.  I ultimately decided on a plan for the day.  We grabbed brunch to start the day.  Then we headed to a wildlife refuge that we could drive through.  It was actually less capturing than I anticipated... andddd I wish we would have waited a day to go, but oh well.

We saw birds, deer, prairie dogs, and buffalo.  I won't lie, the prairie dogs were the highlight for me.  IDK why, but when they'd pop up their little heads or dart away, I was supre

After the preserve, we decided to drive around.  We were going to make a loop out of Denver up into the mountains, then swing around and come out in Boulder, buttttt Teh German was like, why not just drive up to Breck?  And I said ok, since I can be flexible, dammit.

It felt like HOME.
I will not lie.

When we got up to Breckenridge, we immediately noticed that there were no people on the slopes, which was bad news bears.  But, we trekked through town towards Breckenridge Brewery anyways.  We managed to find a super sweet parking spot... and then someone tapped on the window and informed us that the brewery was closed.. which explained the super good parking spot.  Siiiiiigh.

We relocated to one of the slopes parking lots and then headed into town for some shopping and to stop in at the Irish Pub that Teh German had noticed was open as we drove by.

After some sticker and sweatshirt (for Teh German, tyvm) shopping, we headed to the pub and Teh German had a beer and we shared some tots.  We spent some time scrolling and chatting.  We had plans to see a comedy show at 7, so we left Breck by 4 to head back to Denver.  Since getting down the mountain is always faster (and more gas efficient) than going up the mountain, we had plenty of time to spare before our 7pm show.  We went to the ticket office to get tickets (since there was a $10 fee if I bought them online) and then headed to a German restaurant a block away to pass the time.

I had some apple schnapps and made sure to send a selfie to Papa G, since he's the king of schnapps.  After 1 beverage, we paid up and headed to the comedy show.

The show was pretty funny, it's crazy how different regions have different types of humor.  This is probably an over-generalized statement, but based on what people were laughing at in Denver vs what people laugh at, at comedy shows in Charleston.. they are not always the same things, in the same ways.

Either way, we were glad we went.

After, we debated on dinner and opted out since we weren't really hungry, heading back to our hotel room for relaxin' time instead.

If you aren't using this trick to close your hotel's curtains, you are wrong.

Monday

Monday was the day that everything in Denver shut down...  Booooo.  We ended up eating breakfast at the hotel so that we had room for our 1pm food tour.  In almost all the places we went to, we were informed that we were the last people that would be in the restaurant until CV passes.  Which was kind of a bummer, but also kinda cool.

We had 6 different noms and nothing hurt my feelings.  Actually, the hot dog was too spicy for me to eat, but that just meant more for Teh German.

1. Neapolitan pizza
2. "Please wait to be meated"
3. Something delicious from the Butcher Bistro.
4. Hot Dog from a famous hot dog place.
5. Soft shell kobe beef taco from a fancy taco place.
Not pictured: Fancy sheeps cheese with apricot preserves.
6. Ice cream from Union Station.

Walk alone. Pave a maverick's trail, or venture hand in hand together with hope.  Seek out hidden treasures buried well within the cockles of this fair city's heart that is home to the adventurous, where passion churns deeply.  This city summones dreamers to come and do.

Never eat more than you can lift.

I can resist most everything except temptation.

You are cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

After our food tour, we were out of things to do... and unfortunately, everything was closed by that point.  I even called Prost to ask if they were open and you could only get take-away beer from them.  Boooooo.

So we headed back to the hotel to be lazy for the rest of the afternoon.  I did opt to pick up Cheesecake Factory for dinner because dat pineapple upside down cake cheesecake is LIFE.

We spent the evening watching some show about people who live off the grid in Alaska/Washington state and I have never NOT identified with anyone more than in that situation.  Eventually, it was bedtime.

Tuesday

I had asked for late checkout on Monday when we came back to the hotel, so we lounged around until we had to check out at 2.  We had Cheesecake Factory leftovers for brunch... and I also had the rest of my dessert.

Dis my excited face.
The more chins = the more excitement.

Photographic evidence of our laziness.

We checked out of the hotel and headed straight to the airport to drop off the rental car and get through security.  Security was a breeze (thanks Pre-Check) and we found our gate.  We scrolled for a bit and then decided to go grab Smashburger for dinner since food wouldn't be served on the flight and we were going to be getting in after dinner time east coast time.

We got boarded and endured the 3 hour flight back to the east coast.  I, unfortunately, made poor life choices and did not hoard enough media to entertain myself throughout the flight.  I used all my Disney Emoji Blitz lives and finished a book and then had nothing else to do.  Siiiiigh.  I did manage to use the plane's wifi to watch an episode of Reba (it's a guilty pleasure, mkay, mind yo bizness)... but then the 2nd episode wouldn't play no matter how many times I reset the wifi, sooo I just gave up and started playing solitaire until we landed.

We made it home by midnight.  I had everything unpacked and the suitcase put away before Teh German came upstairs.  We were in bed by 1245...  and the "normal" routine started at 0530...

I waited to sign up for the Divas half marathon in Myrtle Beach to see if they'd post a coupon code.  They did not.  And as I was struggling to pay the $126 registration fee, I Googled coupon codes for the race and there was a Groupon deal that came up and I ended up paying $65, which is less than the early bird registration.  #WIN.

Can we please just cross fingers and toes and do mystical dances that my race doesn't get cancelled? kthx.

March 3: WiCyS Conference is still on!
March 5: We're cancelling the WiCyS Conference.  Cancel all your travel arrangements.

Know what cannot be refunded?  Basic economy plane tickets.
Guess who is still going to Denver anyways?  Me.  And Husband, of course.

I tried to cancel the tickets through a chat that took almost an hour of my life for less than 20 exchanges and then I got pissed off and finally just called the customer service line after the stupid website that the chat agent sent me didn't work.

Additionally, the website is for the refund "team" to "determine" if you are actually going to get a refund or not, your tickets MUST BE CANCELLED before you can request a refund either way, so you're at the mercy of some person to decide if you get your money back or not..  all because the fucking corona virus...

A millionty years after the statement was made by a Samsung rep that a women's health section of the Samsung Health app would be added... IT IS FINALLY HERE!!!  I literally let out a whoop of joy before 0700 and Teh German was extremely concerned about me.  He was like, there are probably other apps out there you could have used.  I said, "Oh there are, but I tried them and didn't like any of them."  Him, "Of course you did."

He gets me.
Now I can track my non-existent period (thank you, IUD).  Truthfully, I just want to be able to track my symptoms so I can tell when I'm reacting based on PMS or if it's fat week/etc.

I had to write my own bio for the award ceremony... and it had to be under 100 words.  This is what they got:

Megan is currently a Day Veteran (Navy) student at the Citadel, majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Cybersecurity.  When she’s not doing homework or at her full-time job, she attempts to spend time with her husband, [Teh German], and their two dogs, Pax and Meri.  In her remaining free time, she runs half marathons, rides her motorcycle, and likes to take naps.  Megan volunteers as the social media and blog coordinator for Greyt Expectations Greyhound Rescue.

Update: This bio will never be read at the award dinner because all campus events through March were cancelled.  #ThanksCoronaVirus.

I know I'm not alone in this, but I just want to whine about the amount of money I'm at a loss for because of Corona virus cancellations.  A LOT YALL.  Multiple race registrations, flights to said races, flights to Denver if we hadn't decided to just come anyways, arrangements for rescheduled races, etc.  This just sucks.

Packing is hard.  Yes, I made a list that was pretty much the same thing repeated for 6 days.  #ItsHowIDo.

Planning a running outfit for a destination that is cold is difficult when you went on a run earlier in the week in a skirt and tank top because it was in the high 70s.

Travel is always an adventure for me.  Sometimes a good adventure, sometimes a bad.  Thankfully, this was a good adventure.  I will admit that the smell of hand sanitize and wipes that permeate all the spaces now is rather pleasant.

I find joy in the computer science major part of the Citadel advertisement at the CHS airport.

2 things to complete my childhood: Ferngully and Forest Gump (which Teh Sister watched over and over and over and over and over).

The tag says: DEFY GRAVITY!
Attach straps to seat and stop falling forward.
There was no way to attach the straps; gravity was not defied.
I definitely got a chuckle from this.

The mountains are calling.. and I am home.

DREI - From My Phone Shit

While I think it was a competition to see who could be MORE on my pillow (please note Pax's foot), this still melted my heart a little bit as they so rarely snuggle.

By far the weirdest shit I've ever seen my granny do:
Put gravy on pancakes.
DAFUQ?

Opinion on the Funfetti creamer:
Not the worst thing I've put in my mouth, but not as delicious as my Peppermint Mocha creamer.

Hades event for March?
YAS PLS.

The rage face when you are told the shuttle is unavailable to bring you home, even though you requested it when you made the appointment and so they call an Uber for you.. AND THEN 10 minutes later, the shuttle driver comes out and leaves in the shuttle for an appointment.  I WILL FUCKING SLAY YOU.

And then this was the windshield of the Uber.
WTF?

Granny did NOT leave that bed like that when she left...
I imagine the redecorators had 4 legs though.

FÜNF - Things that made me happy this week

1.  Riding to dinner.  Teh German likes having excuses to ride the new bike.
2.  Doing work.
3.  Wants not needs.
4.  Workouts that make me sore, even if I whine about how sore I am.
5.  Race emails actually coming through.  Somehow I unsubscribed myself from relevant race emails for the CHS and MB marathon weekends.  Soooooo it's lucky that someone else is always running it with me because otherwise, I'd have no idea what is happening.
6.  Race leaders who are human and not just in it for the money who allow for cancellation but also are like, let's do this anyways because we're not required to cancel!
7.  DENVER.
8.  SNNNNNOWWWWWWWWW
9.  Teleworking for the indefinite future.
10.  Vacation for husband and I.

Weekend Review {3/9}

FRIDAY

No post Friday, oops, but life took over and it just didn't happen.  Don't worry, I'll make up for it this week.  Work, then school, then home for some teleworking until it was time for Teh PT Wife and I to head to Myrtle Beach (MB).

When we got to MB, we hung out with our hostess at the bar where she is a bartender for some free beverages.  We headed to the expo before dinner.  Again, we were disappointed.  1- It was held at Dave and Busters and it was a clusterfuck.  There weren't a lot of actual tables either.  Oh well.

We had dinner at Bimini's again, as tradition dictates.  This year, I made the wise life choice to NOT remove my card from my wallet or even remove my wallet from my purse.  We ended up just splitting everything anyways, so I PayPal-ed Teh PT Wife and we all laughed and appreciated my credit card strife from last year (when I left my card at the restaurant and it never made it's way back to me).

After dinner, we headed home and hung out for a little while and then it was bedtime.

SATURDAY

We were up at 0615 on Saturday morning to get ready for the race and head out.  Since we ran the 5k this year, we had to take a shuttle to the start, so we had to allow time for that situation.  Additionally, it wasn't warm outside (a breezy 40°F and falling), so it was not a pleasant wait for the shuttle to arrive once we finally got out of the car.

Pre-race selfie

We only ran the 5k for the Bless Your Heart (BYH) medal you get for running a Charleston Marathon race + a Myrtle Beach Marathon race.  We debated doing the half, but since it was only for the medal and we ran the half last year, opted for the shorter distance.  THERE WERE REGRETS.

1- You run on the boardwalk, which is theoretically very cool, except that it winds down the beach and there are benches on the path and there were half a million people crammed into an area that is maybe 5 persons wide... and no thanks.

2- Shuttle to start.  Ugh.  You can park and walk to the half start, which means I can sit in the car (and nap) if it's cold until I feel like it.

So tired... hahah, like it wasn't just a 5k.

Blllaannnngggggg

The biggest perk of doing the 5k is that it only took us ~30 minutes to run it and then after getting our BYH medal, we checked out the post-race tents (minimal options going on there) and then we didn't even have to wait to get a table at Johnny D's for brunch.  Last year, we had a wait.  Our hostess met us, eventually, for breakfast.  Eventually because she was blocked by so many closed roads for the race that she almost just said fuck it and turned around and went home, and no one would have blamed her.

After brunch, Teh PT Wife and I headed back to Charleston.  Teh German was out on a ride so when I got home, the beasts were dying for attention.

This shadow wouldn't let me out of his sight from the moment I got home.
Like I was gone for half his life instead of for less than 24 hours.

I unpacked my shit, started the laundry, puttered around the house, finally showered, and then plopped on the couch for resting.

2019 BYH (top) vs 2020 BYH.
This year's medal seemed so much bigger than last year's.
And this year's was better because beach umbrellas on the MB side and pineapples on the Charleston side!

Meri and I celebrated our 6 year anniversary on Saturday.  I wasn't sure what kind of treats I was going to give her/them, but then I kept it simple.  We had a sample bag of food from the dog event I attended with Teh PT Husband/Wife in Feb and this PB needs to be used, soooo frozen PB kongs with surprise treats inside were made up.  I put them in the freezer and they each got a kong for dessert.

Teh German and I went to Walmart to order my new glasses, which was almost a debacle when the guy didn't want to help me since it was after 5:30 and he closed at 6 (uhh, rude), but he did and I bought 2 pairs of glasses and should have just bought one, but whatever.. Then we hit up The Codfather for dinner.  We sat at the bar and this old asshole beside us kept talking to us, which was fine until I realized he was a drunk asshole.  He kept trying to make me feel bad for being on my phone.  He also told us about how important he was and how only less than 10 people in the US can do his job because of all his experience, blah blah blah.  At one point during his self-boasting I straight up said, "Do you want a cookie for all of that?"  He didn't get it, but the bartender heard it and gave a chuckle.  He also tried to give us shit for ordering on a half order of the fish and chips.  Bro, you don't fucking know me.  Mind your own damn business.  Yes, it's good, but I don't want to make myself sick.  /rolleyes

When we got home, it was stretchy pants time.  I handed out Kongs to the beasts and Teh German and I watched Dark until definitely after my bedtime.

SUNDAY

Sunday we woke up at whatever time it was.  0930?  IDK.  Time change makes life hard.  I managed to get my ass in gear and get to the Burpees and Brews workout at Ghost Monkey.  I only went because on a Sunday morning, Ghost Monkey is only 30 mins from house.  I hung out after and drank my coffee while the others had beer.  I finally left around 1 to get home and do productive things.

I was surprised to find Teh German still at home when I arrived.  I figured, for sure, he'd be out riding Lars-/Ludwig (his not-yet named bike, I truthfully think he just wants to call it "The BMW" on principle, but I refuse... also on principle).  Ultimately, that is what he ended up doing, but after we walked the beasts and ate lunch.  This worked out ideally since I had homework to attend to.

I can also now say that I've called the cops on a neighbor.  Technically, they don't live in our neighborhood, but on the other side of the wooded area behind our house.  I'm not sure who thought it would be a good idea to have a fucking fiesta all day, but I could hear their music IN MY HOUSE and that was unacceptable.  When I called the county non-emergency number, they insisted that it was from the city limits housing and transferred me to my city's non-emergency line.  I was annoyed because I KNOW the house is NOT located within the city limits, but, of course, I know nothing.  Thankfully, the lady who answered the city's non-emergency line took down my complaint and said she'd call the county for me.  Thank you, Lady, so much.

Within an hour, the music turned down or off.  Either way, I couldn't hear it, which was all I cared about.  I'm not a "call the cops" person... but disturb my peace inside my house.. and all bets are off.  I should not have to use my noise cancelling headphones in my house for a noise that isn't coming from within my house.  Period.

I managed to power through almost all of my homework before Teh German came home.  We had tacos for dinner and I headed back to the office to do the last bit of my German homework and finish a Cricut project for Teh PT Husband.  Then I headed to the couch for an episode of Dark.

After screen time, we headed to bed.

______________________________________________

I was awake at 03/04 this morning.  I'm not actually sure what time it was.  I looked at my watch and it blinded me and I tried to do math and with the time change everything was fucked up and I know that I've been awake since well before the alarm went off and that makes me disgruntled on a Monday after losing an hour.  I mean, technically, I didn't loose an hour of sleep because I slept until I woke up on Sunday, but principle since it was dark outside for like.. ever.

The downside to no Friday post is that I didn't get to share that my Women in Cybersecurity conference got cancelled.  No worries though, we are still headed to Denver this week because I'm not losing $800 for our already paid for plane tickets.

This week is kinda busy.
-Tues evening: We're getting an estimate for painting the hizzhous.
-Weds evening: Gettin' the taxes done did (finally).
-Thurs morning: I fly to Denver and telework for 2 days instead of going to the WiCyS conference, Teh German will be meeting me on Saturday for our Spring Break mini-vacation.

I am not sorry to see March blasting past.
60 days until graduation.  Teh Bestie sent me her flight itinerary this morning!
Days until next race: 6.
Days until I am with Teh Bestie and Matilda for another runcation: 18.
Medals received in 2020: 5

Weekend Review {3/2}

FRIDAY

Friday was work, then school, then home to hang with Granny and avoid all things political people related.  We had debated going out to dinner and I was tired of trying to decide, so I threw a porkloin in the crockpot in the AM and when Teh German came home, threw together a salad and mac and cheese and that was that.

It was a quiet evening and I can't remember what we did.  Maybe watch hockey?  I can't remember.  Time passed, we went to bed, thank you, next.

SATURDAY

I woke up at 7 with the dogs because I had shit to do.  I started working on my homework and slowly, others woke up.  Knowing that I wouldn't be able to attend the Burpees and Brews workout class all of March because of run commitments, I made it a point to attend on Saturday.  I got my ASS kicked and then handed back to me, then kicked again.  Moving on Saturday was fine, but Sunday... lawwwwddd, Leslie Knope gets it, "Everything hurts and I'm dying."

On my way home from the workout, I hit up my polling place and cast my vote.  It's it's not a general election, it took me longer to walk into the building to vote than to get checked in and cast my vote.  For real, from parking to leaving the parking lot was less than 5 minutes.  #WIN.

After getting home and eating lunch (because I was a hangry hag), I showered and then we headed out to the new Firefly Distillery location in Park Circle with Teh Neighbor Besties.  Granny even tagged along (I didn't give her a choice) even though she doesn't partake.

Because Firefly doesn't have food, you are limited on the number of beverages you can have there (2).  So when all our drinks were consumed, we headed across the street to Holy City Brewing since they have "a full bar" now.  They don't.  They really need to fix that.  Since it was cold and dusty, we had an appetizer and a few beers were consumed, then we headed to Commonhouse.

I had a beer and ordered some tater tots that I was afraid would never arrive.  They did after Husband went to order another beer and ask where they were.  It got cold-er, and we finally headed home.  Teh German went over to Teh PT House for smoking time and Granny and I held down the couches until Teh German came home.

We had some snuggle time and then it was bedtime after some screen time.

SUNDAY

Sunday was adulting day.  Teh German got up with the beasts and I slept in.  Eventually, I got up and showered and headed downstairs for chats with Mama G and Papa G.  We were out the door by 1030 to go to brunch at Metro Diner then to Sam's/Walmart for groceries.

I finally found the Funfetti creamer Teh Advising Sister... advised me of.. after a month of searching.
It's not the worst I've had, but it's definitely not my peppermint mocha creamer.

After getting groceries put away, Teh German went out for a ride and I pulled the meat from a rotisserie chicken for dinner later.  I had wanted to accomplish some homework, but my body was so excruciatingly sore from the Saturday workout that I laid on the couch instead.  I tried to nap, but every time I was almost asleep, Granny's phone would make some sort of loud ass noise or she'd say something that would rouse me.  Siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

Teh German texted to ask what time he should be home and I told him 7.  I started working on dinner shortly before 6 and when he got home at 6:15, I wasn't disappointed.  We ate dinner and then I headed to the office for some homework and sorting out my life time.  I also printed out directions for Granny to get back home and then from her house to Charleston, if she wants to come back.

Eventually, it was sleepy time, bedtime chores were accomplished and then bedtime.

______________________________________________

Overall a great weekend.  It was also a good visit with Granny and I think she was ready to leave since I make her participate in activities, which is more work than just sitting on the couch all the time watching Fox News and Dr. Phil (Jesus take the wheel).

I love hate the Saturday workouts.  Being soooo sore is miserable, but I feel so accomplished after I do the workout.  I really need to do some running, but grappling myself to get out of the bed has been impossible.  And as someone with a full race schedule.. doing some runs between the races probably wouldn't be a bad idea... Just sayin'.

Midterms are coming, so I'm trying not stress about school things, but there's so much going on in March that my anxiety is creeping up... in addition to some professor issues (PITA professor broke his hip and wrist and got a concussion over the weekend and a professor on sabbatical has been subbing in for him, other professors going on travel, + midterms still happening = anxiety).

It's finally March.. and we're marching through 2020 and I'm not sad about it.
